LION Battery - Batteries with Power to Spare

Mugen Power - Confidence In Knowing You Can Do What You Need To Do!

Have you ever been using your iPAQ when all of a sudden a warning message comes up that indicates that you are low on power? If you have been engrossed in a program, game or just surfing the net and that message appears from nowhere, it sort of takes you back a bit if you're not anticipating it.

All of a sudden you need to "shut down" and find a source to recharge your iPAQ. Hopefully you're at home or the office and have your charger available so you can get that much needed surge of power into your device. Of course, with my luck, I would be in a situation where I needed to continue to complete that task I was working on and now I am faced with a potential disaster --- no power. What is worse is that if I were in a location where I couldn't get to a power source --- what then?

I suppose a spare battery is a possible solution. If I could carry an extra battery, then if I was faced with a low power situation then I could at least change the battery to be able to continue with my task and avoid disaster. Having a spare battery is really not a bad idea even if you never use it; it certainly is a comfort knowing that you have the ability to continue with what you were doing after a quick battery change.

Although changing a battery "mid-stream" is a solution, is that really the best solution? For several years, I have adapted what I was doing or going to do because of the limited battery life I had on my iPAQ. I would use my iPAQ everywhere I went but if was always careful to make sure I was at full charge before I began a task. If I was not at a full charge, I adapted --- that is to say, I either didn't do what I wanted to do or found a power source to bring myself up to full power.

Truly this process, even though it worked, was an inconvenience. There had to be a better solution. I had given serious thought to an extended battery and eventually had given to me at Christmas, an extended battery that gave me more power than I had with the stock battery that comes with the 4700. However, I was surprised at how it came.

It was a larger battery but the extended back was empty. The design was a battery the same length and width of the stock battery but had a deeper measurement. A new back cover came with it but it was a silly design --- it was filled with a large void space. Why? It made no sense to have an extended battery with a new cover that was large and EMPTY.

It was just a design feature I guess --- dumb as it was, I had more power than before so I was able to perform additional tasks without too much fear of running out of power. But then that day did occur and I was not a happy camper. There was no question in my mind that if that battery was larger, that is, if it had extended into the void space of the back cover, I would have never run into that problem.

I'm not sure which forum is appropriate for this topic, but today, as I was travelling on a 6 hour trip, I took a spare Li-ION battery (3.7, 1800mah) with me. I changed it out in the morning and when I went to turn on my unit, it had WIPED ITSELF CLEAN!!!! My internal "backup" battery read 100% when I switched out. HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO SWITCH BATTERIES WITHOUT LOSING ALL YOUR SETTINGS/DATA. THANK GOD I HAD A BACKUP FROM HOURS BEFORE I MADE THE SWITCH! Otherwise, yikes! I have dozens of various software I've installed over the past months, which would be HELL to reinstall!

Any hints or other threads you'd recommend on this. I have a 4700, btw.
I just purchased an extended battery for my 4155. The wording of Dave's article made me think the 2000mAh battery was standard dimensions. It's not. If you get these bigger batteries, realize your unit won't be thin anymore and won't fit in your metal cases anymore.
I'm having a hard time finding a decent case now.
Correction to my 5/19 post: My last post made it look like it is Mugen's issue with the 1.10.08 ROM--NOT TRUE AT ALL. After much research and testing it has been found that ALL bateries are affected-the stock 1800mah one, the HP 3600mah one and the 4500mah Mugen.

That power drain/reporting issue *is not* Mugen's issue--it is definitely HP's issue and can be reversed by reloading the 1.00.09 ROM. This is confirmed with Mugen and Lionbattery. I have purchased two of these batteries and know them to be awesome as such.
Watch out! This batery is awesome under the 1.oo ROM. 9 hours of run-time! BUT I am having problem with the usable capacity of this battery under the new 1.10.08 hx4700 ROM upgrade. I get about 50-60% of the run-time capacity after the upgrade (4.5 hours of run-time versus 8 to 8.5 hours before!) If anyone else is having this problem, contact HP and myself so we can get it fixed with HP in a patch...
From the reviews of the Mugen products, I too, was convinced. My 4700 is now sporting one of their 4500 mAh batteries. Had to get a Sena case for the extended battery, but it was worth every cent.
Thanks for the article. Interesting. I bought one of the HP extended batteries for my 2750 and it came with a charger and back. The Lion product for the 2750 doesn't include a charger but is substantially lower in price AND I noted that the HP product is rated at 2330mAH and the Lion model is rated at 3200mAH. FWIW
I cannot recommend these batteries enough. I carry the iPaq 4155. I purchased a 2000mAh LION Battery several months ago. It fundamentally changed the way in which I use my iPaq. I never even think about whether I have enough power any more. My iPaq still fits in the stock case too. I cannot imagine having a 4500mAh battery. WOW!
