I don't need a HD with a carrier. I don't like carrier devices anyways. Just give me the opportunity to buy a US-spec device via online or brick-and-mortar retail and that would be just fine with me.
If the HD is truly not coming anywhere near US shores, then HTC better get started leaking the next kick-butt design that is due for this market and will be meant to compete head-to-head with the "Fruit Phone!"

Here is a funny thing:
I called HTC America and the lady who answered the phone said that HTC had no plans for HD coming here. I then asked if the next device slated for the US would be coming with WM 7, she said "Let me pass you to the technicians they would have a better idea about that". I then spoke with a technician and he verified with his supervisor that the HD was slated to come over here after they finish with the Diamond and Pro devices. He said that there were no plans regarding which carrier or if it was coming unlocked only, but that it definitely was coming.
I then called the same lady back and informed her about the conflict of information and she stated that the only official statement is that there are no plans to bring the HD to US right now. I then replied that this statement leaves it up in the air, it could come here or it could not and she agreed.
So, there you have it. That was my little contribution. Decide for yourselves, until the next announcement from HTC.

Technically, it's very easy to support any combination of bands you want in these devices. It's not a hardware or cost issue. Further, HTC would like to sell as many phones in the U.S. as possible, especially if they carried the HTC logo.
The issue is that in the U.S., the carriers are the phone manufacturers main customers, not end-users. The HTCs and Nokias of the world have to convince the Verizons, AT&Ts, T-Mobiles, Sprints, etc., that their wares will sell more contracts and services and/or increase market share while at the same time minimizing costs. To the carriers, mobile phones are a delivery means and aren't consider critical to the primary revenue stream (something to which I would expect most MT readers would strongly disagree with!)
Manufacturer frustration with the U.S. market is very evident. A couple of years ago, Nokia replace almost it's entire U.S. marketing staff, to little effect. HTC is to be commended with trying an end run with Best Buy though I've read that sales aren't meeting expectations.
Until the U.S. handset market is decoupled from the service market, handsets will always be second class "citizens" to the services.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that Chris, seems like they are kicking back trying to figure out which 3G band that we support would bring them the most business. Now with the 1700 coming online, they will probably take longer.
Still, I think the attitude with which they project when they talk about what will be available to US does not make sense. Why say "We do not have plans to release HD in US" vs. "We are reviewing which bands to support in US before making plans to release it there."
I mean why kill the buzz like that? I would have held out for a US HD, but now I think I will just go with Touch Pro or X1 for the next 2 years. Although, I have to say that the BB Storm, Thunder or what have you, is starting to catch my eye.
My only problem with Android and BB are the software availability. I would at least need an RDP and VPN client for my current setup to remain cost-effective, if not the same apps that I currently use on WM which sync to desktop versions on my PC (E.g. QuickBooks Pro).

In Palm you could set the mobile number as primary, you don't have that option in Outlook.
You can use categories later, but you have to have them established and use them or lose them.

JN, you are correct. They did announce that the US version would be out by the end of the year. The big question which was not answered until they released the US version was whether or not it would have US 3G.
Clearly they did release a 3G version for US.
My point is that HTC has a habit of leaving things up to mystery, just to wind up releasing the devices anyway. They are way too comfortable with keeping US market in the dark and at the back of the bus, so to speak.
This is why I say that we should totally boycott any of the non-US devices that they are coming out with.
It is too bad that the Velocity folks did not step up to the plate here, they have a perfect opportunity to stick it to HTC and grab up a bunch of their potential market by releasing an HD type device before HTC releases one here. If they do. (Although I believe they will)
Then again, how much market does the US really have to offer to begin with? That may have something to do with it too.

Alceded, throughout Europe the 3G bands are all standardised. We use GSM 900 and 1800 for the normal bands and 2100 for the UMTS (3G) bands. This is standard in Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania (ITU Region 1) and Brazil (part of ITU Region 2. The problem is the USA uses 850, 1700 and 1900. That is exactly why HTC does not release these devices in the US straight away.

Within the european nations does each carrier use its own 3G band like T-mobile and AT&T do in the US? If not then could the lack of a standard 3G band have an influence on HTC's decision?

You are incorrect about HTC intent for the diamond. The day of the london release HTC explicitly stated that a US version would be available towards the end of the year which they obviously delivered on.

I'm looking forward to seeing how customers adopt Cricket's plan. It will definitely be interesting to see how these plans evolve as consumers start using such services across all of their internet applications and get frustrated by some of the restrictions. Carriers definitely need to protect themselves with reasonable usage clauses otherwise abusers will ruin it for everyone, for ultimately they can't offer unprofitable services. I expect that only abusers will be impacted and that they won't enforce it for "normal" usage....we'll see.

They originally did not have plans for the Diamond coming to the US either. We all saw how that turned out.
Wyatt, you make a good point, and all the more reason for no US customer to purchase the HD until they release it here. What is the point in funding a company that is not releasing devices in US? I say, reward them after they have done the job of bringing over a proper HD device not before they do it.

I'm no fan of HTC due to these games they like to play with the U.S. consumers. For HTC that statement simply means they will release one in some form or another after enough people have spent their hard earned money to have the HD imported here at an inflated price just to say their answering demand. Not much substance.
However, I have been thinking the HD over. Something tells me alot of current WM owners that get the device are really going to miss not having a d-pad. Obviously, for things like touch flow, media browsing, Opera, etc the kinetic scrolling and large screen are advantageous.
However, I know (and own) too many applications where they are not finger friendly and a d-pad to navigate and control the application properly is a must.

Im sure those of you that own the Touch Cruse will be happy with the MINOR improvements as I was last year on the Treo 750. A day later, you may forget what was actually upgraded. :)

I'm using Proclip and have had variuos active holders from Brodit and they have all worked great. Now I'm just waiting for a Turn By Turn navigation software before I can retire my Tytn with TomTom software, and get the active Brodit holder for my iPhone 3G.

I have a ProClip for my Wing and it works perfectly! Definitely worth the money, never have to deal with stupid resetting of suction cups nor destruction of the interior of the vehicle.

Any device that sports the microSDHC logo is supposed to be in compliance with the SD Association's microSDHC specification. That specification covers microSDHC cards to 32GB.
If for some reason a device with a standard microSDHC port can't read and/or write to a microSDHC card with a capacity of 32GB or less, it's not a hardware issue; the issue can be addressed with a firmware update to the device.

It's hard to tell from the article what impact this will have in the United States, though at least some of the participants are at least based here. It's not hard to believe that consumers would welcome a competitive alternative to existing broadband services, though with caps of 1-5GB/month and content limitations, mobile broadband won't be competitive with much. For an initiative like this to work in the U.S. there must be a corresponding investment and upgrade of the 3G networks and a loosening of the restrictions in their use.

It will interesting to see how this compares to Snapstream's Beyond TV (Maximum PC's pick for the top TV desktop application). I've been using Beyond TV for a few years now: it's rock solid with lots of recording options and formats, including DVD burning, and the included FireFly remote is the best PC based remote I've ever used.

You make a good point Alli, but a vast majority of folks who are attracted to the iPhone, are attracted because of how little technical knowledge is needed to use the device. So, keeping that in mind, I would tend to believe that these same people would rather not bother with the whole jailbreaking process.
In addition, I do not believe that anyone has come out with the unlocking capability for the post 2.0 iPhones (not 100% sure about this though). If that is the case then these phones are simply the only options for unlocked versions of the latest firmware.

Dave, my money is that they will release a device with WM 7 in first Q of '10. That is the trend and I do not see MS straying from it. They are completely confident that there is no platform competition they need to be concerned with. It seems like as far as MS is concerned they are not loosing any observable target market share and they do not feel the flame under their @sses yet. Hell, look how long it took for them to release SP1 for Vista. They simply are not responding to a gradually shifting market.
I think I will still get the HD if it comes in the T-Mo 3G band, if not and T-Mo does not come out with a WM device to take my breath away, I am moving to AT&T with an unlocked HD.
Great show though, it was nice to video chat with you and Steve after the show it was so late though that I think I woke up with my face on the keyboard of my laptop. lol

I just listened to your podcast for the very first time on the way in to work. I thought it was very grass roots, unpretentious, and with good quality analysis. I also like your choice of co-host. There's a good rapport between the two of you. I also enjoy your choice of album cover & intro/closing music. The reset button isn't that hidden, although it's inside. if you take out the stylus pen you can touch it. It's made like that placed in that corner so you can press it with the stylus very quick.

Agree... I have had InvisibleShield's on a few of my devices in the past, but lately I have had no luck with them. I went through 3 of them before getting one that was SEMI-clear. They all have that Orange-peel look to them.
I tried to Zagg to replace them, but they told me "this is the normal imperfections of the material being used" and it's not covered under there warentee. So I returned them to Best buy (Glad I purchased it from bestbuy).
Will try Bodygaurdz...!!!

Obviously T-Mobile views 3G as a cash cow (Hey GigaOM, isn't than another reason 3G is so expensive!), and obviously T-Mobile is going to strictly control the apps that use their high speed network. The G1, since it won't operate without the network and supposedly you can't even buy one unless you live in a area served by T-Mobile 3G, the G1 will be impacted more by T-Mobile prohibitions than most. First T-Mobile told Google no VOIP. What's next?

I'm going to start a rumor based on my experience working for two major U.S. corporations.
When a company is thinking about exiting or selling off a line of business, one accepted strategy is to have a high raking officer first announce impossibly high hopes and goals for the product. When the product invariable fails to meet those goals, analysts who follow the companie's shares invariably call for the company to focus on it's core strengths and dump the under-preforming product. If a company appears to be following the analyst's advice instead of just doing what was intended all along, the company is almost always rewarded with higher valuations.
My rumor (prediction) is that MIcrosoft will spin off WM in 2009.

What's interesting is that BusinessWeek thinks Andriod is more of a threat to WM than the iPhone.
Personally, I took a look at an existing T-Mobile "broadband" contract. Unless T-Mobile is making major changes to accommodate Andriod, developers creating connected apps are going to have to do so with both hands tied.

Like I said before Phys, I wouldn't expect TOO much from Android out of the gate. I have a sneaky feeling some of the first devices will get attention because the OS is new but I still think the OS will need to go thru some evolution to truly reach "cool" status.

It is pretty basic that if you have to worry less about conserving power, you can let the processor have some breathing room with the power management routines. In addition, when you have more RAM, you do not have to do as much paging to ROM as when you have less RAM. This also leads to improved performance, and is analagous to the relationship between virtual and physical memory in PCs and MACs. The more RAM you have the less paging is necessary to slower memory media.
The bottom line again is that the HD, like the Pro will be faster than the Diamond without sacrificing anything at all.
The HD is dangerously close to a true iPhone killer and the iFans are squirming in their pants. HD has better video than iPhone and waaaaaay more functionality out of the box. I am only hoping that Android will bring it when it comes out in October of this year, contrary to a bunch of other disinformed individuals stating that it was going to be delayed until 2009.

Physboy, battery capacity improving performance? Only with a smattering of pixy dust. Touch Pro faster than the Diamond? Both use the same chipset running at the same VCC. The PRO has more RAM, but is being used by a graphics accelerator? Don't know. (It may be that the extra RAM is needed to support the video out connector.)
Regardless, I don't think it prudent to by overly optimistic about a UI's responsiveness based on pre-shipping firmware, and maybe not for a couple of firmware revs after a device ships. Having owned a Touch, an iPhone 3G, and now a Omnia, I'm very confident about not being confident concerning the (un)laggy-ness of the HD. Still, it's on my short list for Christmas.

Mic, here's one. Today, I bit the bullet and subscribed to the T4 and Mobile Tech Moment news feeds. The issue for me, scientifically speaking, there's now 10 gadzillion tech sites and podcasts out there so it's hard to sign on to another one unless there's clear value.
I do have a question about the T4 site: how do I subscribe to podcasts if I'm not an iTunes user?

That is the main reason why I used Coreplayer on my Touch, because of the lack of drivers. But I do not think I will need it on my Diamond.

Android brings only one thing to the table. Choice. Another player in the smartphone market is always a good thing. As far as being less suseptable to manufacrure and carrier app prohibitions I doubt it. All the mobile OSes suffer from this one way or another not just the iPhone.
Dave, I wouldn't worry about your app being pulled because it doesn't compete directly or even indirectly with iTunes as did Podcaster. MTD only streams the MT podcast for listening with out storing it on the iPhone. iTunes on the iPhone doesn't even support podcasts which it should. Pofcaster allowed streaming and storing of any podcasts on the iPhone. This conflicts with iTunes on the desktop more than than on the phone. In any case it was unfortunate and foul that it was pulled considering I can't download podcasts on my iPhone directly.
Good show guys, Engadget and Gizmodo are all flash and quick news without substance. Mobility Today is for those who want real information about devices that are actually tested and used for more than a day. Also, this site's population may not be large compared to some others but I'll take quality over flash any day. That's what real tech enthusiasts go for; real information not fictitious rumors.

I am getting a little concerned about the lack of any kind of d-pad or scrolling assistance. HTC will need to really nail down the kinetic scrolling and improve it over recent touches.
Also, the lack of a center action button (on the d-pad) is used in several applications that I use. I also find it very convienient to use in various applications.

I used various versions of the Core Player on different platforms and have found then very efficient when they work. The good news is that there's a large community behind the player support is needed.

The backlight turns off after 40 seconds. But there is a registry tweak that I posted in the HTC forums that prevents the screen from turning off.

Have you had any problem with the backlight going off quickly when on a phone call? Has there been a fix either via registry or cab to address this? Is it present on the Sprint version?

That is true JN, but the same advantage of 'tweeked' software is in the Pro and HD but with better hardware. Bottom line both will perform better than the Diamond without ANY need for loss of features. In addition, there have already been benchmarks published showing this fact with the Pro vs Diamond as well.

I used The Core Player a lot on Palm, although never for streaming. Kinoma's interface and ease has it all over TCP. It seems incredibly dated now, and really hasn't progressed much since TCPMP days, which is unfortunate.

As adept as Coreplayer is at playing many types of media, one the main criticisms over the years (even going back to its TCPMP days) is the sometimes confusing and bit outdated interface.
That being said, Coreplayer has been the only multimedia player to overcome some of the inherent lack of video drivers on the Cruise. Out of all the players I have on the Cruise, Coreplayer does the best at playing video files.

I never had problems with youtube videos playing on my device with Core Player. Must be a Treo 800w limitation. Have you tried this on other WM devices besides your 800w? As for podcasts, I never used Core Player as my main podcast player. I prefer either Pocket Player or Pocket Music for that. And as for Pictures, why would I want Core Player to view my pics anyway? There are much better applications out there for photo viewing and editing.(ie. Resco Photo Viewer)

Nice Podcast. HTC is doing the same thing that Apple does with showing off new products before the release it here. The HD blows the iPhone out of the water, better color and image quality than the iPhone. In addition, Opera is rendering pages better than Safari. I agree with Dave on this one, iPhans beware, WM devices are getting kewler. lol
I disagree that HTC does not release devices here. All the recent devices have been or are being released here in the near future. It just takes HTC forever to get here.
The Touch Pro has a flash for the camera too Dave. It is not hard to tell who the iPhans/WM haters are on this podcast. lol
Welcome to reality people, the iPhone has the same or worse issues as WM devices and is not even as open yet.
Dave, your app competes against the software platform of the iTunes. If people are using some other software platform for aggregating podcasts then iTunes gets less "walk-in" traffic. Simple marketing concept, and is probably the main reason they do NOT charge for podcasts. It makes perfect sense, just not good for consumer, typical Apple stance.
Blackberry finally joins the feature set of the standard devices out now. lol
I am so glad that Android is coming out to actually spread the playing field and force more inovation in the mobile arena! Even Palm is now promissing a revamped OS by 2009 now! Woohoo, go consumer advocacy and competition!

Blue, the HD has more RAM and battery size in mahs why would it not be faster than the Diamond? The Diamond Pro is faster than the Diamond and it has the same hardware as the HD. It makes perfect sense to me that the HD is faster without taking anything away.

It should be up in the YouTube video now: there's a so-so English translation. The big caveat is the unit shown is pre-production. For instance, the commentators keep saying how TouchFlo 3D is faster on the HD than the Diamond, but you have to wonder if anything is disabled on the HD allowing TouchFlo to run faster.
Still, a good look at what could be a very impressive device.

I just finished listening to the podcast. Thumbs up! Mobility Today will never be Engadget or Gizmodo - thankfully! I subscribe to their feeds - they're good for breaking news, that's about all. If I want a knowledgeable hands on appraisal, I turn to Mobility Today, WMExperts, and GSM Arena.
That's the problem. If I'm a rep for a manufacturing and want to get the word out about my new phone, I'll go with Engadget and Gizmodo with their bigger audiences and thin reviews rather than a site like Mobility Today with a smaller audience and the possibility of getting a negative review.
I have two questions for the panel about Android:
1. What does Android bring to the table (WM, OS X, Linix, Symbian)? Remember, most people don't buy smartphones for the OS. In other words, what will I be able to do with Andriod that I can't do on the other platforms?
2. Will Android be able to avoid manufacturer and carrier app prohibitions like those currently inflected on the iPhone?

The Touchflo2d is pretty much the same as Touchflo3d on the Diamond. The only diference is that TF3D has better visual effects, but other than that they run the same. I agree with Jerry that Touchflo2d made my Sprint Touch feel like having a new device.
Jerry, The HD will be a awesome device.
Installed Resco File Explorer and Softmaker Office 2008 on my Diamond. Both run great. Excel documents are much easier to view on a VGA screen, which isn't much of a surprise.

I sure hope WebIS corrected the uninstallion issues, otherwise you will be in a world of hurt when (if) you attempt to uninstall the application. I remember the uninstallation process screwing up my KJAM to the point a hard reset was needed.

Running TF2d on my Cruise and it's definately like having a brand new device. For now, it has most definately surpressed the need to want to replace the Cruise. :)
Regarding the Diamond, the unlocked GSM version would definately be on my short list as my next device with HD running neck and neck with it.

I would love to hear comparisons regarding ease of use from TouchFlo3d on this droolworthy device to your experiences of touchflo2d on your touch.
I am running touchflo2d on my tilt and loving it...just wondering what the touchflo on the diamond brings to the table.

Unfortunately the SMS situation *is* 100% dependant on the poor implementations of the APIs on Windows Mobile. You'll never get perfect SMS in FlexMail because the APIs on WM are very inconsistent in their reliability. One some devices the SMS APIs hard crash a device. On others they work great. As such we don't use the SMS APIs but instead a less reliable method using MAPI which works only if "tmail" - the Windows Mobile messaging app is running in the background and ready to listen to requests.
As for a quick sync - we have that - its in the menu called Send/Receive. When you start FlexMail up you can have it automatically connect and do a sync. There is no such thing as "quick sync". A sync is a sync. You can't skip steps and still call it a sync.
I recommend making FM sync on startup automatically for sure.

Basically...
They liked:
.Screen resolution
.Sensitivity of the touch screen (very responsive (like the iphone)).
.Opera Mini rendered page better than Safari
.Rubberized back
.Bigger fonts in menus to accomodate fingers touch (vs stylus).
There was no SIM so they didn't test the phone part.
That's about it for this video.

Doesn't look like much of a mockup to me but a rather bad copy and paste job.
It looks like the image http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/app.html?id=5 was slapped directly onto the HTC HD and blurred out to make it look 'real'. It's not even scaled to fit the screen.

You can always move to Europe. The one thing that seems better here is the availability of HTC's products.
In the US you always get nice things first, just to name a few: TiVo, Swing Player, Hulu, Zune (can be debated), iTunes Store etc. Regulations for each of the countries in the EU seems always to cause troubles for Content Providers.

forgot to mention, I got mine for $35 in bulk packaging (which means a plastic bag). a week later the same unit was $45. I believe to get it in nice packaging it is $10 more, though you can still get new units at a decent rate on ebay.

Not a bad looking device, it seemed that the switching from portrait to landscape was a little laggy like my Tilt before WM 6.1. I just don't know if I like the panels concept. I guess I would have to play with it. I kind of like SPB Mobile Shell's interface, but in the end I would have to play with the panels and see how they work.
