SECURITY IN A MOBILE WORLD! ---- PART IV

Data/Application Backup Applications for the Pocket PC

If your device is compromised, you will likely be able to restore it to a previous state where it was known to be working. Backing-up your device’s data and applications is a solid way to ensure your downtime is minimized. Compared to performing a Hard Reset and re-installing all of your applications, re-synchronizing your data, and then reconfiguring your applications and Today screen to work just the way you like them, a Restoral is less than four or five minutes of work.
QUICK LIST of Data and Application Backup Applications for the PocketPC
- ActiveSync Backup (included with all ActiveSync capable PocketPCs). Check your PocketPC documentation for more information.
- iPAQ Backup (included by HP on most models of iPAQ). Check your iPAQ documentation.
- Sprite Backup is a Backup Application with a short learning curve, but has less options than Backup Manager below.
- Backup Manager is a much more complex program than Sprite, having a much larger feature set. Accordingly, this program has a much steeper learning curve. This program is capable of creating a self-extracting file that you can restore from, without having the program loaded on your device. Very Cool!

Hardware Recovery Applications for the PocketPC

Sadly, there are no technologies or applications available today that can prevent or assist you in recovering a stolen PocketPC. Such technologies are only just emerging for Laptops, so it will be a while before they are available for the PocketPC platform.

Wireless Wi-Fi Encryption & Tunneling Services for the PocketPC

There are Subscription Services available for users who wish to encrypt their sessions while using a Public Hotspot. Two “subscription” based-products listed in the Laptop section would prove quite valuable for PocketPC in the future, but unfortunately only offer PC-based clients at this time.
This leaves only two products left in this category, which are simply VPN Tunneling clients which will provide you with connectivity via any internet Hotspot back to your Company/Home VPN server(s).
QUICK LIST of Wireless Wi-Fi Encryption & Tunneling Services for the PocketPC:
- The VPN-1 Secure Client is geared towards enterprise businesses.
- Certicom previously offered “movianVPN”, a PocketPC based VPN client, but the company has discontinued this product. The rights to the code have since been sold to Antha VPN. In turn, Antha VPN sells the older “movian” product and their newer “AnthaVPN” product.

This issue is certainly at the top of my priorities list and I am glad to have somewhere to go where I can read about it.
All I can say "FABULOUS" I am honored you chose us to post this series!
I was very happy to write this series! I hope a lot of people were able to use some portion of the information I provided.

Jack, I appreciate the sentiment at the end of the article! It's good to be appreciated!
Thanks Elrendhel - amazing stuff, and so well-written - I shall read this over and over. I so appreciate your work here.
One of the great things about T-Mobile's Hot Spot service is that they offer WPA protected access with Access Point isolation (This means that each device on the given wireless network can only communicate with the router, as opposed to being able to communicate with other devices on the network.)
Outstanding series Elrendhel! Thank you very much for opening our eyes to our needs for SECURITY IN A MOBILE WORLD!
