HP iPAQ h6300

Software

The h6300 comes with Microsoft Windows Mobile™ 2003 software for Pocket PC – Phone Edition which is geared towards PDA’s with phone capabilities. HP has added some nice exclusive add-ons for the h6300 that make the end user experience purely enjoyable.

When dealing with wireless HP has added iPAQ Wireless which is a utility that simplifies the connection management of the three wireless features. So if you look at our photo you will notice the end user has three options Phone, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in which they can either turn on each function or change settings. Another nice feature in the iPAQ Wireless is the big yellow question mark. Once clicked the user has a step by step instructional about the three wireless technologies.

HP Profiles:

A utility that allows the user to define profiles for wireless connectivity Bluetooth Manager. If you are familiar with the traditional cell phones you will notice they have preset options such as meeting, outdoors, silent and office. This profile came in handy especially when meeting with customers who don’t want to hear my phone ring in the middle of a meeting.

Storage and Backup

The h6300 comes with 20 MB of iPAQ File Store space and approximately 55 MB of SDRAM storage space. The unit offers 64 MB SDRAM and 64 MB Flash ROM. To ensure the protection of data on the device HP has included iPAQ Backup by Sprite Software which is an application that allows fast and easy backup and restore, selective backup and restore, scheduled backup, battery monitoring, password protection, and compression of the backup file. The selective backup and restore feature allows selection of the entire system, a specific file, or a database. Scheduled backup can be established based on defined time, date, or battery level. Scheduled backup and battery monitoring notifies the user with the option to accept, decline, or postpone the backup.

HP Image Capture

Snap a photo and share the image with your friends and family – either from your iPAQ Pocket PC or from your desktop computer. Send your photos in an email, create an album on the web, or share them directly by sending them over Bluetooth to another iPAQ Pocket PC. Also using the HP Mobile Printing software you can print pictures directly from your iPAQ Pocket PC to wider array of Bluetooth, infrared or network printers. This software also gives the end user two different selections zoom and wide angle. I was extremely shocked to see this feature since the camera is so small. They also included a self timer, white balance, resolution selection (highest 640-480), color, b&w, sepia, negative and cool. During our tests we did notice the photos we took indoors were the “traditional” looking camera phone cloudy pictures outdoor pictures were better.

Instant Messenging powered by OZ

T-Mobile has a quick launch icon for the end user to select between three instant messenging services such as yahoo instant messenger, AOL instant messenger and ICQ.

ClearView Presentation

ClearVue Presentation for the iPAQ provides all the necessary tools to give a full-featured PowerPoint® presentation. Once the files have been transported to the device, ClearVue Presentation does not require any file conversion, ActiveSync® filters, additional software or even a desktop connection. This application is functional and simple to use from wherever the business is. It includes support for the desktop Office timed transitions, custom animations and inserted charts, graphs, text and images.

ClearView PDF

Open, view and print PDF documents received via email, downloaded from the Internet or transferred over the network on your iPAQ using the ClearVue PDF software. With the integrity of the original files in tact, the information can be accessed just as the author intended. ClearVue PDF does not require any file conversion, desktop connection or ActiveSync® filters. All files are accessible from wherever, whenever, just another clear integration with the h6300 mobile experience.

I've had my 6315 for a month now know problems, and no Idon't work hp or T-M
I just bought the h6315 but for my own unluck it is still locked to T-Online but i am looking to use it in central europe, and with another provider then T-Online, can someone help me please with the unlocking ?

Thanks in Advance
I am using this in India. Its almost great and I love it. I love the camera and the media playback/powerpoint slideshow. But every time I remove the battery, the unlock code gets lost and I have to enter it again. Also as someone else posted, the sound is not too loud. I updated the ROM too. I would be glad to sell it to someome in India. I have the thumbkeypad, and also a much bigger, foldable infrared keypad, along with a car charger and an a.c. charger. I bought it all in US for $600.
My first ipaq 6340 worked for 3 weeks, and then the screen alignment went ary. HP tech support couldn't help and suggested I return it to my retailer as it was within 90 days of purchase. Dixon’s kindly replaced it, but I had to go to an airport Dixon’s, as no other retailers in the UK stock them, and HP weren't interested in sapping it. The functions on the PDA and phone worked fine, except the phone and network service settings reset themselves every time the phone is switched off and back on again - HP could not help me solve this either. 3 months after I bought the Ipaq, it stopped synchronising with my Pc and Outlook. To cut a very very very long story short, the ipaq has been returned to HP and back to me twice and then IO returned the cradle and they sent a new one. Each cycle takes 6 working days, many phone calls (for which the customer pays), several case and technical reference numbers - when you can get through to the call centre, that is. They are now telling me the Ipaq has to go back to HP again before they will consider replacing it. So 20 + phone calls, about 5 hours of troubleshooting, 1 direct fax to their MD - a Mr. Stephen Gill who did not even bother to reply - 1 month without my phone or PDA, and I am still without a phone and pda. It would be extremely difficult for me to recommend this phone, especially as all my colleagues have Sony PDA phones and none of them have had a single problem.
I bougth a new HP iPAQ h6315 pocket PC and it has been SIM locked to T-mobile network, please tell me how to go about unlocking it, so i can use it with another network and how much it is going to cost me,please i need the reply now as i am online.
After 12 weeks, and 4 units, I can definitively state that the 6315 device is highly unreliable. GSM radio is very weak - other T-Mobile phones work fine when the 6315 shows no signal. Horrible tech support from T-Mobile. Blue tooth hasn't worked properly on any of them. T-Mobile unable to get pop3 e-mail to send from device. I have spen over 65 hours (mostly on hold) so far. Avoid the T-Mobile 6315! Wait for next generation!
i from Guatemala, and i need to unlock my hp 6315, somebody can help me ???
tks.
It's really amazing how this device gets good reviews....Basically, anyone that gives it a good review hasn't used it for very long--the device sucks and I wouldn't recommend this "500.00 paperweight" to anyone.

Nobody can support the damn thing, and you don't receive half of your phone calls. The recommendation that Tmobile gave me was "Sell it on Ebay if you don't like it"....hmmmm, what service.

My recommendation--do more research than reading one article and look at all the "rants and complaints" that are floating around on the net!

I need help, I need to unlock my HP Ipaq 6315, I live en Costa Rica, Central America.

Any Help Please.

Thank
Dear fyz88,

I just bought a hp6315 1 week ago it was locked ,
Could you please help me in getting mine unlocked. Appreciate your help. Let me know how much is the cost involved?

Thanks,
bluetaurean76
This phone has far too many issues to be used in any reliable manner as a telephone. And, T-Mobile and HP both refuse to support it.
Hi,
I just bought an unlocked Ipaq but it seems like the GPRS is still locked on T-Mobile. Does anyone knows how to unlock it so I can use the GPRS with any carier?
Thank you

any software for me to send n receive fax with using ipaq h6300 series?
Can I orgainse the photos to link with the mobile no of incoming calls to identify as can be done with Nokia mobile phones
IM LOOKING TO BUY THIS UNIT IN THE USA BUT WILL BE TRAVELING TO SPAIN SOON.
WILL I NEED TO HAVE IT UNLOCKED?
AND IF SO HOW?
hi,
How can I progamme my iPAQ 6315 phone nos. in a such a way that I get the picutre of the caller instead of the Nos. as can be done on other make like Nokia
1. The speaker phone function will not activate, until you have started a call. At that time, press and hold the green phone button down until you see the speaker icon come up on your screen. Even then, the volume/quality of sound you get from the phone will only make this option usable in quiet places.

2. In order to make this phone call by voice, you have to purchase a $40 program called microsoft voice command. The way it works is you push a button (what ever button on your handheld that you can sacrifice to this function) and you can then speak a command. " Call joe blow at home" "Call joe blow on mobile phone". If Joe Blow is on your contact list, exactly as "Joe Blow". The phone will announce "calling Joe Blow on mobile phone" . Is this correct? You say yes, and the call goes thru. There is no voice training involved. Anyones voice will work the commands. It will also open other things. Say "Open contacts" and your contact list will open. I have not had wonderful success with it yet. I find it buggy and inconsistent on my IPAQ 6315. Part of it may simply be my learning the pronunciations that the program likes.
hello everyone. i recently purchased the ipaq h6300. please help! cant turn on speakphone option. i'm unable to hear w/out using a headset.. can anyone help???
Hi, I live in Mexico. I have the h6316, here we do not have t-mobile service. I need to use a different carrier. Is there any one who can help me to unlock my PDA??
Is there any way to voice dial with this model? The bluetooth headset is kind of pointless if one has to dig up the unit to dial a call.
I love my 6315. I did need to get the rom upgrade for sending emails - now it works fine. However, I cannot hear the phone ring - no matter which ring I choose. I have the speaker at the loudest setting. Any chance they are planning to fix this soon?
Great review! thanx David and great device; i'm sure i will get 1 when available in Holland here, they said mid sept but its end sept already and still waiting...
i love to have 1 device (less pocket space), including phone using BT HS, and play vids and games on my desktop comp, so i go for the 6315 (or 6340 GSM as its called here)
Any one want to UNLOCK hp6315?? I just got my one done! it's a great unit to be have . I'm using it in Australia.
Does anybody know if HP will be offering an SDK to access the GSM/GPRS at command set similiar to what they did with the GSM/GPRS expansion pack for older models?
I want to buy a HP ipaq H6315 (with camera) but I need know if is possible use in Argentina, I suspose that we need with unlocked one

I NEED THIS PDA!!!!!!!!!

gotta rob a bank, brb
Does anyone know if this will work with the HandsFreeLink in the accura cars?
Hi! Newbie here! Think the Ipaq 6300 Series is Awesome! It has some minor gliches in its software (e.g. poor speakerphone features which may need a patch)content but the overall features make-up for that! One thing I'd like to know is how do you get palm programs to run on pocket pc. Are there any cross platform converting palm into pocket pc format? Also how do you get pocket pc programs to run once installed? Lots more questions! But I'd like to start with these.
It does support WPA
I have a univeral Earset (from Bang&Olufsen) and it works with OXDAII and nearly every mobile phones fine without any adaptors. Can you tell me how the earset plugs into the iPaq6300? I want to know if my universal Earset will work with this iPaq.
Great review. Does this unit support WPA and TKIP authentiation for WiFi?
No i didnt notice a hissing but did notice the speaker level was considerably low.
Dave:
Do you have a hissing noise when on the phone? I had to take my first one back to CompUSA because the hiss was so bad. My second unit is not as bad but a colleague of mine really noticed it. Almost like the speaker is getting feedback from the unit.
Thanks
David Byrd
I have recently borrowed my daughters HPJornada
and have found it usefull in the engineering game.
I draw sketches on site save them and tranfer them onto my office PC then to Autocad.
I am thinking of buying the Hp iPAQ6315 when it finally arrives but need to know if it will have the Word drawing fascilities of the Jornada. Will the cell phone and other utilities all be compatible with the South African environment. Will you be able to develope say engineering design formulas and programs to utilise on site. Why dont HP design a programmable type Pocket PC Phone for the engineering industry. I am sure it will be a massive success
Hi Dave, have you tested how's the battery consumption with multitasking speed? You know last time HP launched HP928 (PDA+phone+camera)with very poor speed in their processing (TI OMAP). BTW have any idea when will it come to Indonesia? Thx.- Sastro
Hey ipaq geeks, what is the difference in ppc 2003 software and ppc 2003 phone software? Are you able to put a good variety of programs on the 6300 unit? When does the ipaq go on sale?

Thanks -IPAQ GEEK.
I'm a newbie to IPAQ devices and don't know what IPAQ $$ trends are,
does anyone have an estimate on how much this 6315 version would drop in $$ in 3 months?
or how much would the unlocked versions be when they come out after T-mobile's exclusive contract ends with HP?
asking as I might buy one now or what for the others depending on price differences.
Because it uses a TI Chip can I install all ARM programs?
It's been three weeks and I've heard nothing from T-Mobile. I signed up for their email list for early ordering. Has anyone heard anything other than the HP site says the 26th? Painfully waiting...
Its as slow as dialup.. Not bad..
Excellent review. How fast do web pages load using GSM/GPRS. Is it painfully slow or relatively quick?
Sweet! If this works as I think it does this will enable the deaf to use this the use a video sign interpreter for phone calls.
Yes. you can stream video and talk at the same time.
David, Have you tried to stream video while using voice call the same time?

Thanks
One great piece of hardware...luv it!
Do you know is this device will support EDGE?
Giacomo said - I can't help by ask myself why should anyone step back from 128 megabytes of RAM to 64 and from a 400 megahertz processor to a 168 one?

txcas - Can you say battery life?
As a highly satisfied MDA II owner since November, and contemplating to purchase the MDA III next week, as soon as it becomes available in the U.S., I really would like to see a "shootout" between the HP 6300 vs. the new MDA III! Until then, I can't help by ask myself why should anyone step back from 128 megabytes of RAM to 64 and from a 400 megahertz processor to a 168 one? Giacomo
Could I unlock a phone like this myself (to use in other countries)?

Or would I have to wait and buy a special unlocked one?
review should be soon
Any chance of getting a review on the HPx4700?

Overall, not very impressed with screen size and in particular memory. Although I can appreciate that's a lot of hardware crammed in to one PDA.

Biggest dissapointment is that once again HP refuses to acknowledge it's loyal customers by making the 6300 TMobile exclusive.

Wouldn't a better marketing plan be to give existing ipaq owners a first bite of the cherry?

Why should we wait just because T-Mobile offers little or no service in our area? Or even just the fact that a person doesn't want to be under contract?

great review dave, loadoing the pdf file out of regular internet conection was slow?
I think you will have to wait for the unlocked version.
I live in Saudi Arabia and I'm considering purchasing this item with any price
but the big QUESTION:
If I purchase the T-Mobile Version is it will work in my country???
NOTE: WE DONT HAVE T-MOBILE IN SAUDI ARABIA

Thanks a lot
I can accept the mediocre amount of RAM, but I'm still worried about the processor i.e. performance, running muliple programs,etc.. Also does it have the same connector as the XDA & some other IPAQ's-I realize pin assignments will differ. Any comments, Dave? THX
Yeah but only TMobile is carrying it
Holy Smokes! Then I can use Video Relay Service and voice call the same time! https://www.sprintvrs.com/
I would like to test this and see for myself.
Yes it works like a charm! That was one of the most impressive features.
Dave, Have you tried to download/browse and and talk on the phone the same time?
FYI - T-Mobile is now taking, "exclusive e-mail invitation to buy the HP iPAQ h6315 before it officially goes on sale". Here's the link: http://www.getmoreconnected.com/

They also have a link right on the T-Mobile homepage.

Fortunately for me T-Mobile is the ONE and ONLY carrier that works reliably at my home. :)
I am just happy we were able to deliver this review to our community in such a timely manner.
Thanks Dave for the review
There is a difference between the 17xx and the 6300 not huge though
Is the connector the same as previous iPAQs (e.g., the h2215)? I'd like to use my existing extra power adapters.
I just read a review on PocketNow and a comparison of the display showed that the 6315 is much more "washed out" and has less contrast than other PPC devices. Did you notice this Dave?
Scale of 1-10 probably a 7-8 ... Wouldve like to see more memory..
I didn't see it listed in the "Bluetooth" features but do you have any idea of the HP can be used as a wireless modem for another device?
Nice review David. Over 24,500 hits! Amazing. What I would like to know is on a scale of 1 - 10, where would you rate it? I live in Saudi Arabia and I'm considering purchasing this item.

Thanks.
Interested in the thumb keyboard. Is it sturdy when attached?Could you keep it on all the time?Do buttons light up for nighttime?and most importantly, are the buttons so close together that make it difficult for input or is the spacing better than the 4350.
Yes our traffic has been crazy.. The numbers are correct.
24,500 page views on this topic? Dave, is this true?
The specs I've seen so far show a standard mono/mic headset. Will it support a stereo headset and is there one available?
Here is a reference to the 6315 and T-Mobile at Forbes. http://www.forbes.com/personaltech/2004/07/26/cx_ah_0726tentech.html?partner=yahoo&referrer=
Not sure.... I would think they will sell this eventually unlocked.
All this waiting, and only T-Mobile has it? In my area, they have the least reception and capability of anyone. Any chance that Cingular will ever have something like this?
I get that but what about direct with no contract...?
I am hearing around $499 with a 1 year contract.
Dave, any word on pricing if you already have a contract with TMobile?
Very cool review/product, but I am not sure this is the silver bullet I was waiting for.
Why did HP go with such a relatively slow processor (168 MHz)? Power consumption? And 64 MB RAM is ok but the 5555 and 4705 have 128MB and 135MB. The one thing missing from 5555 was GSM. Now we have GSM but not as high specs. I have so been waitingfor a super powerful PDA that also has GSM (I already have a GSM phone)- but now there are still compromises. Will HP have supped up 63xx models on the near horizon? Or should I break down and buy an XDA II (GSM, 400 MHz, 128 MB RAM) like I could have 6 months ago. I waited for HP / IPAQ but I'm not sure I should have at this point. Comments? (lschleng@alum.mit.edu)
Just hope it will be available in Canada through Rogers.
2 - 3 weeks max
Hopefully with the 850 Band added T-Mobile will have much better coverage. Here's Hoping, Any Ideas Dave as to when they will be availbable?
No update to 2003se its running phone edition. We will be selling them here and it would be nice to support the site so we can do more giveaways..
Nice job! This is a great unit.
HI DAVE,
GOOD REVIEW ON H6300, JUST TO CONFIRM WHETHER H6300 WILL HAVE UPDATES TO WINDOWS MOBILE 2003SE.
I AM CONTEMPLATING BETWEEN MOTOROLA MPX AND H6300.
dave, you did a great job on the re-new website. salute! by any chance, you want to sell off the 6300, let me know hehe!
hey dave thank for test drive, one question only when this ipaq will be for sale in you web page site.
mar aka username
Second that...
i am very sure it can play gamed... just what type? gba emulator?no not even the pxa273 624mhz can handle well. others l believed should be fair. l would say anything1910 can do, this 6300 should better or on bar.
In your shoes wait......47xx will be your best friend for video.
kmchong: my work is footing the bill... i just know that i want to be able to play movies/games and if the 6000 series can't handle it i'll have to lose the phone feature... =\
please post 4700 questions in the forums.
Ringtones are same as alert tones and downloadable. I ran the unit like a horsethat day!
why 4700? the cost is so high.. unless it is 500:P
This unit does not support BES. It will grab email when you specify. I had mine for 5 min
thanks. 36% for a day use may not be good. does it has the phone turn off functions when only use as pda. the previous HP9*** has this to preserve battery. ring tone? polyphonic? can the ringtones downloadable?
Did it really include support to connect to a RIM BES server? This is the key for me I want to get down to one device instead of carrying a phone and a PDA for corporate email. So I really need it to include support.
OK, I'm sure this device will play videos and games just fine. Dave, can you give us a review of game play or video playback in Windows Media?
Thanks for the rapid reply Dave! =) I think I'll go for the 47xx... While a phone would be cool, if you can't play visual media or games(?) then it's more of a workhorse than a.... playhorse?
iwannaipaq...do you need a phone? If not hold off and get 47xx..
Battery I used majority of the day with 36% left. Reception and signal excellent by me. Screen clarity identical to 2215. Vibrate yes, in my review under profiles... You'll love it.
Ok... I have to ask you Dave: Is the 6300 capable of playing TV shows/DVD rips or should I just shell out the money for the upcoming hx4705? I'm just worried about the processor power... =(
how is the battery performance? reception signal and the voice clarity? It would be nice to know this since it is more of a phone than pda. btw, how is the screen clarity compare to ipaq 2215? does it have vibration mode and how is the ring tones... wow... indeed i am looking for a phone and thats why so many question...pls help to answer
Did you see this? http://davesipaq.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3341
Ummmmm did you click on the links? I have the unit and on it now. How can you think I dont have it. These photos are the property of this site.
good review... but can the fonts be slightly bigger for easy read so we do not need to strain the eyes.
do you really have the unit? the review does not seem to cover the actual use scenerio but can be an imaginative review base on the rumours and pieces of info available... i do not know but just feel it is not too objective and offer to little details if the unit is really on hand.
This review is great!
No it isnt.. For now it is. But the unit should be available for other networks in the near future.
T-Mobile? Way too bad, Their coverage just stinks. Is this the only planned carrier?
Within three weeks
How do I get one? When is it available? What is the best ISP to have with it?
No it will only work on GSM/GPRS networks
Nice review, nice device. Along the same line as Neile1's question though...will this phone ever be able to work on verizon? I think the answer is no, (ipaq seems married to gsm/gprs technology), but wanted to ask. I had tmobile and was not happy with the limited availability of their service in different areas of the northeast. Friends with verizon could use their phones, while I could not. Needless to say, I made the switch....
Ah ha! Now I get the reason for keeping us all awake! Thank you and enjoy the h6300. I can't wait to order mine later today.
TMOBILE
Who will be the service providers?
very nice review dave :)
