I have an OQO Model 2 with Vista - it is pretty much unusable with that operating system. Should have ordered it with XP. I am trying to eliminate some Vista features to try to speed things up, but really want to install Puppy Linux to see if things can be speeded up. Bought it specifically to use with Skype but have not been able to install that yet. Battery life sure is short, even with the solid disk drive.

For those looking for a solution to mount their OQO model 02 in their vehicle and use a GPS navigational system, we have worked with several companies and now offer the 02 car mount. This adds another dimension to this device. For in-car pictures and pricing, take a look at http://www.buildyourumpc.com/OQO-model-02-Vehicle-Mount-p/oqomodel02-carmount1.htm.

Dave,
Did you have a chance to try out the U720 EVDO modem? Does the USB port have enough power to drive it at decent speed?

shhwang,
The standard battery is terrible. I am getting about 4 hours out of the extended battery, depending on usage.

mocs, thanks for the tip. I changed to Max Power and things are running much better, but I am only getting an hour and half of usage on a regular battery. I think I should have chosen XP Tablet, I am not impressed with Vista.
Also, people should know that the USB port is underpowered for external DVD drives and hard drives. they will not work unless they have a separate power source which is disappointing since i wanted to use it to view dvds while traveling.

Hey shhwang,
I am running XP Tablet on my oqo and it is performing great. Slingbox, skype, yahoo music, movies, etc. I have really been pleasently surprised. I originally ordered mine with Vista, but changed to XP after experiencing slow down issues with Vista on my other laptop. I'm glad I made the switch.
By the way, I did find that when I ran the oqo on batter power, with the power setting on "Max Battery", everything slowed WAY down. It was almost unusable. It took me a while to figure out the problem. You might want to make sure it is on the "Laptop" power setting.

Why is it faster to boot from a cold start (1:30 seconds)than coming out of sleep (3 seconds)?

Hi there, I have the 01+ and just love it. The biggest problem with the 01+ is the wifi. It is very weak and is only 802.11b if you can get a connection. I find I have to be almost in the same room with my router to get a good connection. Has that changed with the 02?

Mocs I agree totally.. My unit is very streamlined and not bogged with excess apps.

Hey Dave,
Love your web site. I finally got my OQO the other day. After using Vista on another laptop, I changed my order for the OQO and got it with XP tablet. Vista is such a hog I couldn't see the OQO handling it very well. The 3 minute boot time on your machine makes me think I made the right decision. My 02 boots in just over 1 minute flat. Although I absolutely love this machine, I am guessing that once you get some serious apps running on it, Vista will start to bog down. I look forward to the rest of your review.

great review. you are the first guy to have reviewed a VISTA OQO in the world...a few requests for you which no one else on any blog has done till now:
1. Please do a video review of the Vista Tablet functions. Can one use it LARGELY as a ink device? i.e. use it to write and store pages in Ink without converting them?
2. Can you try skype 3.2 using EVDO and le us know how it works with a via processor and oqo?
3. Can u pls do a video of Dragon with the fan speeds at different levels to check interference?
4. Can you comment on the usability of the keyboard viz a viz a Traditional Blackberry keyboard , and say a fujitsu 1510 keyboard?
5. Is it possible to do a head to head with the Flipstart?would again be a first for anyone out there to do so! Intel vs. Via
6. Lastly how good or bad is Via's perforamnce. Can you try voice commands on Vista? Do you think that can substitute for keyboard usage?
thanks a lot..if you can answer some of these either by video or on your blog it would be gratefully appreciated.

An active digitizer requires a special pen where touch you can use your fingers.
|
|
Forgive my ignorance.
What is the difference between a unit having a touchscreen versus an active digitizer.
Thanks

Great device. The price point is too high for this type of unit. I went to there web-site and if you buy the unit, docking station and case its over $2000!

It looks cool, but after owning oqo 01 tablet and then the vaio uz 280p. I would find it difficult dealing with 800x480 native on the 02.
BTW. Never Mind the NEW Version of the OQO, What about the new streamlined version of you!!!
I have to say at first, I thought there was a new guy doing the video cast.
Kudos to you Dave, that cant have been easy to undertake such a dramatic tranformation.
If poss could you do a side by side comparison with the vaio UX.

Hi David, thanks for posting this review. I was looking carefully at the boot time, and I think the times you were calling out during the video were off by ~35 seconds. You pushed the power button at 5:51 (time til end of video) and then said "so far it's been 17 seconds" at 5:00.
The Vista desktop comes up at 2:51, giving a 3 minute cold boot time.

No it doesnt have a phone but it supports bluetooth ao you could pair a gps.
|
|
Does it have a built-in Phone & GPS?
The docking station/port replicator look sharp! A big improvement from the previous OQO's docking cable snake thang.
I'd mod docking stations for my vehicles. Bye bye HP! So long messing with Windows Mobile & praying for upgrade paths to the latest flavor.
I can only imagine "One Device to replace my PC, Phone, PIM, Multimedia Player, DVR, GPS ... more"
