Hey BoneDoc, in the end... It's really what works for you. I have to have the WM OS only because of the software my company has for remote server administration. (We run all Mac workstations and Windows/Unix Servers). Im sure something like it is available for Palm, but...
It seems WM 2005 offers a bit more stability as well - A SURPRISE - from software coming from Microsoft.

I agree with you "interstink" about the Palm OS.
I "lust" after the MS phones with all the "stuff" but I don't want to move to the MS PIM over the Palm. It's too easy to work with.

While playing with the Treo 680 I was having flash-backs. What's funny is how little the palm OS has really changed from my first "USRobotics" Palm Pilot. I guess stick with what works.

Just played with the 680 for awhile today (Friend just bought one). Real nice, best palm treo running Palm OS I have tried yet. I love the look and feel. Buttons are a little close together, but im sure I will get used to that once I grab the Treo 750.

David, if you are moving from a 650 or even a Palm TX PDA, with Palm Desktop version 4.2.0, can you charge the 680 and plug and hot sync the unit, or do you have to install new software?

It's a great price point for people that are looking for Cingular service (or to re-up their contract with Cingular) but the device is defintiely "entry level".
And I have to agree with JNGold. I swore of the Palm OS back in 1999 when I purchased my first Windows Device. I then tried to give Plam another chance a year and a half ago when I purchased a Treo 650 but quickly sent it back vowing to never buy anything with a Palm OS as long as I live.
Sorry, Palm but your OS simply isn't cutting it compared to Windows Mobile 5. Sure, there are a LOT of "gotchas" with Windows Mobile but M$ is the OS pony to bet on-- even Palm knows that which is why they've been pimping their own Treos out to Microsoft and WM5 (Treo 700, Treo 750, etc).
Good value for the individual who just needs a basic Palm device for basic tasks. Kudos to Palm for keeping the price down.

Just saw one at my local Cingular store - They have a bunch in stock.
Still awaiting the arrival of the Treo 750... No signs

Some people swear by the Palm OS. I swore-it-off back in 2000 when I said goodbye to my Color Visor Deluxe. :)

Nice review of a nice device but I don't think I can go back to PalmOS after using WM SP and PPC for so long now. Thanks.
