Cingular Palm Treo 750

Cingular's next Windows Mobile 3G device...

Last year Windows Mobile users were shocked to hear an announcement that the Palm Treo would be now sporting the Windows Mobile OS.. This year Windows Mobile enthusiasts who are currently in contract with Cingular will now have the option of buying one of the best PocketPC Phone Edition devices ever to be released! Being the first 3G Palm Treo makes this device a ground breaking device for those who have been waiting that long year!

When we received our Palm Treo 750 we were eager to dive right in since we were previously using the Cingular Treo 680 which runs the Palm OS and loved the form factor. Unfortunately prior to us opening the box we were informed that the Treo 750 would not be running HSDPA out of the box but would be running UMTS. UMTS -- supports up to 11Mbit/s data transfer rates in theory, although at the moment users in deployed networks can expect a performance up to 384 kbit/s for R99 handsets, and 3.6 Mbit/s for HSDPA handsets in the downlink connection. Where as HSDPA -- provides a smooth evolutionary path for UMTS-based networks allowing for higher data transfer speeds. Current HSDPA deployments now support 1.8 Mbit/s or 3.6 Mbit/s in downlink. Right now the two other devices that are running on Cingular's HSDPA network are the Cingular 8525 and the Cingular Blackjack. From what we have been told Cingular is planning a firmware upgrade for all Treo 750 owners that will provide HSDPA speeds.

Hardware

When you first take a look at the Treo 750 you will notice a clear color similarity between the Blackberry and the Treo 750. Our assumptions are that Palm made a wise decision picking the metallic blue that all corporate Blackberry owners are used to. The colors are so close that they identically matched our older Blackberry's in our test lab. You will also notice the traditional easy to use Palm Treo keyboard that just feels "oh so good" in your hand!

You will also notice some of the customization Palm has previously applied to the Windows Mobile Treo keyboard such as the search button next to the "zero" the brightness control on the "p" key along with the "Windows Start" menu button and your "OK" button. For those who have previously owned the Treo 700w this won't be a change whatsoever but those new customers considering the Windows Mobile Treo's will learn to love these hot keys. New potential customers will become spoiled with the capability of closing windows with the "OK" button which year after year Microsoft continually leaves out of the new OS builds.

If you were to flip the Treo over you will notice a significant difference in speaker size and quality of sound when using the speakerphone. During our tests we were very pleased with the audio quality of music and voice calls. The Treo also has a 1.3 megapixel camera with mirror in which we weren't too satisfied with the quality of our photo's. Unfortunately we continue to suffer from low megapixel camera's within the Windows Mobile arena something that manufacturers like Inventec and HTC need to address very soon! Palm has also changed the stylus slot to accommodate a non retractable stylus! We were very happy to see this change since our previous usage with the stylus on Treo 700w was a cumbersome event

As you look on the back of the Treo you will see the battery compartment which holds a 1200mAh Lithium Ion battery and the SIM holder. We were very disappointed that Palm decided against a 1500mAh battery since UMTS/HSDPA usage does drain the battery significantly faster. That being said we definitely recommend the 2400mAh extended battery from Seidio for all corporate/power users.

I bought a Treo 750 some time ago and how am interested in using the internet features it has. I didn't want to get the PDA package, so I bought a Spectec Mini SD WLAN 11b card to recieve wifi. Does anyone know how to or where I can get an install driver cd, because mine didn't come with one. My OS is WM5.
How do I get HSDPA for my Palm Treo 750? Frustrated with the slow speed. Please help!!!

Thanks,
Bailiz
I'm shopping for a new smartphone, and I need to know if this Treo is able to get the "M" app from Mercora so I can get my digital music wirelessly. Do you know if I can get it on this one?
Well I have had my treo 750 for one month now. I had to return the first one I bought as the calender notification bells did not work. I read that Cingular was having problemes with the bell notification on the treo but the people at cingular said I was the first to return it for that reason.
Anyway, you all sound like you are pretty familiar with this treo and probably a lot more tech savy then I am. I still cannot figure out how to take pictures from my PC and put them in my treo. anyone that can help me I would appreciate it. also cannot downloand the daylight savings time fix from my treo. time keeps changeing back.
thank you all for your help.

I just bought the 750 treo. can anyone tell me a free download site. also how do I download with this. I could not find a treo for dummies book by the way. Appreciate any help you can give me. Im lost with this.
I have had my 750 for two weeks now. I found a hack to get HDSPA speeds. I consistantly get over 700Kb and often get over 900k. About the only thing that bothers me is the battery life. I will buy another battery or always have a charger with me. It is my mp3 player (BT8010 headset / headphones work great), GPS, corporate exchange email, instant messanger, games and on and on... I absolutely love this thing. Best phone i have ever had... Bought it for $149 after rebate from amazon.com. Just do it!!!!
NYC/Queens - I have hit > 900kb at times.
I am on the NYC area, I got my 750W for 3 days now. the max I get after the HSDPA hack is 270KB.
If I am correct, cingular coverage make show that HSDPA is avaliable, maybe I did something wrong. I did place the shortcut in the startup. If anyone tested this in the NY area let me know if you get this to work.
I have a question based on a paragraph (included)From the actual review:
Once you pull out the battery you will see the SIM slot for the Palm Treo 750. Existing Cingular customers should note that non 64k SIM's in this device will cause problems locking in towers... . it is mandatory that you upgrade your SIM to the new 3G Sim cards. If for some reason you are a new customer and purchasing the Treo 750 and they don't give you the 64k SIM make sure you speak to a manager and demand it"
I'm considering purchasing the 750 through Amazon, that will allow existing cingular customers to upgrade/extend contract/KEEP THE SAME PHONE NUMBER. The price is a heckuva lot cheaper than online or, goodness forbid, going to a retail store. However, I would be switching over the old sim from my 2 year old Nokia "dumb"phone which is probably a 34K SIM card. Is it possible to get my card upgraded after I have the 750? Will the 750 even work with my existing SIM card?
Yes, the Treo is Quad band. While the TyTn may be the better "pda" based on specs, the Treo is just the better "phone" based on ergonomics, features and such.
ok but the tytn has a way of using contacts to find the right number quickly, using the jog dial, which I find quite neat. that said I only dial maybe 10-15 times a day, so maybe I am not such a heavy phone user. I still think the tytn has a technical edge though : HSPDA + video calling + the tytn works everywhere I have been, including japan - not sure if the 750 is quad-band ?
HTC Tytn has a PIA slide out keyboard. Dialing phone numbers means touching the screen. No more of that for me! My experience with the KJAM allows me to say that.

The Treo form factor is hard to beat.
HTC TYTN does it all, now.
48 hrs with my new 750! I'm lovin' it!
Its been tree days and this new Treo 750 is solid. Love the enhancements done by palm, im sure I will grow to enjoy more as the days progress. I tried the HSDPA hack and it worked! 700 - 1100kbps. depending on signal strength.

Lucky dawg.... Jerry, are we ever going to have another NYCDAUG meeting? maybe Dave could join us? Let me know....
Yippeee. Picking mine up tonight. :)
Wow, I can't wait to see when T-Mobile will get this. Hopefully they can convince them to add Wifi.
I have done a review of Treo 750v when it first launched in Singapore some 3 months ago.

I would have mixed feeling about the threaded SMS application. It's a great tool, don't get me wrong. However, it does so by sacrificing the storage of the SMS text in the default inbox. This may not be an issue for some layman user, but it's a big issue for me as I backup all my SMS to my Outlook PST via Jeyo mobile extender. Being propietory in its implementation means creating a barrier for users like me to switch to newer device next time, which is a common thing in Asia context.
Any comments on how well the Treo 750 does as a phone? How is it's signal sensitivity compare to the Blackjack?

I am able to get two full hard days of power with the Blackjack as I get one full day with the Treo

Any comments on the useability of Voice Command on the Treo? I had Voice Command 1.5 on my old Cingular 8125 and found that it was a resource hog and made the device too slow to use it much.

Voice Command on the Treo is rock solid!!
I equate the Treo in Cingular's lineup similiar to the BMW 5 Series. The Blackjack equates to the 3 Series and the fully loaded workhorse (the 8525) as the 7 Series.

For the best mix of functionality and convienience the 750 fits the bill.

- Thx
I have the vodafone UK version of this phone and its the best ppc phone i have owned for usability as a phone and pocket pc, the keyboard is excellent but the battery life is awful. I have a car kit that charges it so its no longer an issue for me as i am in and out the car all day so it keeps it topped right up. Great phone i have also enabled HSDPA whick works very well with speeds around 800kbps
Users should note the device will be available for sale on Monday..
