Palm Treo GPS Navigation Bundle

In version 6, the menus look a bit fresher than we're used to. For the first time, fluid colours are used. The status bar will also show a bit more colour while navigating. A bit further in this special you'll find a couple of screen dumps which illustrate this effect very good. Unfortunately due to the low memory on the Treo 700w which we tested it on we noticed only 2MB available in system memory. We were though pleasantly suprised to notice the unit does not hang at all! We previously tested the OnCourse Navagator which was not at all friendly with the Treo 700w. With that software we noticed continual lockups and reboots. I have to tip my hat off to TomTom for making this software work as if it had 32MB available..

Mounting options for the unit were fantastic. One of the biggest problems is finding a secure suction mount. The mount that comes with the Treo is more than enough to hold the unit securely. During our two weeks with the GPS we were pleasantly suprised to see the unit not fall off once. We also were able to adjust the arm for whatever viewing angle we needed.

Conclusion: Over the past two weeks I have been very happy with the Treo bundle. For me personally the TomTom software bundled with the Treo will allow me one less gadget to put into my gadget bag. Previously I owned a TomTom Go 300 unit which I am now giving to my father in-law to use as I go full time with this bundle.. I can see many mobile warriors who currently own a Treo and a TomTomGo unit jumping on this bundle! Overall this bundle is a home run!

Pros
  • Suction mount
  • Handling of phone calls when a call comes in while driving
  • Charging both the GPS and the Treo at the same time
  • Realtime traffic alerts
  • Buddy option
  • Quickness of GPS lock
  • Voice commands are loud and clear
  • Price
Cons:
  • Instead of bundling a 1gb card it would have been nice to have a 2 gb

Overall:

4.8 out of 5 stars

Just got my treo 650 up and running with the Palm Nav 6 system. This is my first nav system, and it was the easiest set up I have ever had for any electronic device! Very easy to use, recalculates route if you take a wrong turn, or turn to avoid traffic. Local street names are shown. As I drive 20,000 mi a year, making up to 7 stops a day with 50% new addresses each day, this will take an easy 1/2 an hour off of each day.
The windshield mount is made in Germany, and is quite a piece of workmanship. I am very happy with this item!
Thats great! love tom-tom but guess what! sprint doesnt support it!
Mine arrived today as well and will be getting everything set up tonight.
My bundle arrived today, it was a snap to install and set up, and it works great. I love this thing already.
Something I noticed and is nice to see for us MAC users.

NOTE: Installation and software activation require a PC with a DVD-ROM drive running Microsoft Windows 2000, XP or Mac OS X 10.3 and an Internet connection.

Compatible with Treo 700w, Treo 700p, and Treo 650 smartphones only
Looks nice and if it I can answer a call on my Moto IHF1000 Car Kit without losing GPS then my Treo 700P will finally get GPS.
Nice review.. I have the TomTom 5.0 unit for the Treo and love it..
The device works with the bluetooth headset. We spoke about this in the podcast..
From the Palm web site... "Compatible with Treo 700w and Treo 650 smartphones only"

Not the 700p?

Anyone know for sure?
It says that you can answer a call while the BT GPS is engaged, BUT can you answer a call while using your BT headset?!? Do the devices support simultaneous BT connections? I would hate to have to rip the device out of the cradle and try to answer the call. I suppose you could put it on speaker, but I use my BT headset while driving all the time.

Thanks,
Kris
Sorry I placed the link on Page 3.. Palm just sent it up to me.. It can also be purchased in any Palm Store in the airports.
This bundle does look great. Palm's web site seems to point to the old version. Where to find this new deal?
"Another fantastic feature is that Palm has made the bundle Treo 650, 700p, 700w friendly so now users don't have to look for Palm OS versions as opposed to Windows Mobile Versions.. "

Revolutionary on someone's part (Tom Tom? Palm?)
Congrats Dave on breaking another story. Before Palm even!
