Great forum. I posted a couple of messages on your previous discussion (180p). Since I'm new to mobility today how do I register for this forum. I look forward to reading more on both the 180, 280 and new 90S.

I really enjoyed this review.
One nit to pick is your side by side speed comparison of the 90S and the 180 at boot time. The 180 has only 512M of memory vs. 1G for the 90S right? Do you think the you see a times 2 speedup on normal performance, for example launching Word?
Good work.

Hi David,
Did u use Vista OS on ur review?
U mentioned abut using Windowsblinds but I check out their web is not exactly like ur, especially the start button, ur was like in Vista.
The other thing I would like to know is that U mention about the conversion from Japanese to English by Dynamism, which part still Japanese?
I have a look on Dynamism and now they've got the UX90 with 32 GB SSHD and 1GB DDR2, cost about $3400
Thanks

Sorry for not telling you this ... Sony uses 7gb off the bat so you have apppx 8gb left...

First, hats off to your site, dedication and helpful reviews.
Second, as most other readers thus far, I am 99.9% sold on the Sony UX 90s, however, could you please inform us how much memory is available after the OS and minor applications are installed.
Third, any idea/rumors that Sony may upgrade the Sony UX 90s to 1gb of RAM as they have done to the new released UX280?
Again, great site, awesome info.

Don't expect much better figures on the battery life compared with the UX180p. I just got mine and although I haven't fully tested it it does seem to drain as fast as my returned UX180.
Yes you can install your own XP Pro on it. I installed mine and got all the drivers/applications from the DVD and the UX180p drivers site.

Just watched the video review and you've 99.9% sold it to me!!! Just a few problems although I'm sure the battery life is far better I'm just wondering how much better it is in figures? (Don't think I heard you mention it in the review). Also any chance of installing over the default os and install XP pro. Thanks for the video review. Can't wait to get one.

I have only recently been introduced to ultra portables, but it seems like the perfect solution for me. To justify the price I do have a questions. I am a realtor and use a MLS smart key to open lick boxes, the Treo series phones work to open the lock boxes, but lack the computing power I want. do any ultra portables have that feature?

I considering a UX for a number of functions. Since you have more experience with the device I’d like your opinion.
• As a Personal Media device. I would like to download TV, Movies & Music to the device for watching or listing on long car/plain rides.
o Watching TV using my home’s NAS archive or TIVO programs to transfer directly to the device.
o Watching Movies attach a USB or i-link DVD Burner and RIP them directly to the device.
o Listening to Music I assume that Sony’s connect music is the way to go here.
• As a Gaming device; I would like to play simple games
o Solitaire, Poker & RPG…
o Yahoo Games, Cubic…
• As a Mobile GPS navigation device.
o Using MS Street & Trip’s & a Bluetooth GPS Receiver in the glove box.
Using internet connection to download traffic conditions?
• As a PDA
o Using MS Outlook while mobile
• As a Photo Editing Studio
o Download Pictures form a SLR Camera using USB.
o Edit Pictures using Photoshop & Stylus pen.
o Viewing & Displaying.
If I could accomplish all of the above tasks I could totally justify the expense of the UX however. I do see some limitations. Memory on the UX 512 MB is a 1 GB Chip available What about storage 16 GB or even the 30 GB of the slower 180p still seems kind of small, my MP3 collection is over 18 GB already, is there any room here for upgrade. The CF or Memory Stick port Might make the Video workable if I could fit a DVD on a 4 GB stick but I don’t know if that’s possible.
This is a hard device to ignore It make’s so many things possible. I cant wait to get mine that’s for sure.

;) no comment but you can checkout KOL Skins along with using Window Blinds

Great video Dave!
You sold me on waiting for flash drive based units to become more common. I can absolutely see leaving a notebook behind with this device.Sony is definitely ahead of the curve here.
Add USB EVDO and you will be rocking.
I truly can't believe how fast it is.
As for getting it past your wife, I'll call it a new PSP for the kids until the bill comes in. Then I'll be out of town.

Yes it should work but the cards dont support EDGE... I will be announcing USB EVDO and USB EDGE Cards very soon in a review :)

Dave
Could you mention in your review whether the current crop of EDGE/GPRS CF cards would work with the unit? I'd think with Windows XP running they would..
Thanks!

Thanks for the great Vid of your review. I want one of these. Not sure I could hide it like my 6700 from the wife. Hopefully these units will catch on and the $ will go down.
|
|
We have two 180P units here and one more on order, but I would love to get the 90PS...if it had GPRS/EDGE. Does anyone know if that's planned for this product like is available in the 180P? Also, what's the difference between the 90P and 180PS (other than aesthetics and no GPRS in the 90 series)?

Victoria I am sorry you picked a UMPC within the origami spec. I personally feel Microsoft needs some tweaking with the spec. Yes the UX is more expensive but for the power it is fantastic. Also thanks for the comments on the podcast. We try very hard to keep it interesting.

Dave :( I was listing to your podcast while feeding my horses on my nokia 770 (I love the 770 for surfing the netand podcasts) and I to had heard the bad review from the person who used it for a few hours so I got the Q1. I am very disapointed in my purchase and want the sony so bad :( So I will trade you :) Please! We all make bad choices every once in a while. I am very happy with my O2 exec xda and feel you need to get your jasjar off the shelf and start reusing it again I bought it based on your past reviews. I got the 4 gig sd and it is my new podcast player with about 25 other programs running on the sd card. I am today going to the local tmobile to get a data plan for it. Thanks for the reviews I wish I would have listened to the most recent first so I could have made a better choice but I will just blow another 1599.00 at staples. Thanks again for your podcasts I love them.

Beautiful photos, thanks. I want one of these but I noticed the SIM slot in this one is the CF card slot. Do we need a CF adapter for wireless access on this one? It does have the GSM chipset just as the 180, right?

Jerry yes I have seen some. Not HUGE but noticable.. I am going through some battery tests today..
|
|
Dave,
Have you seen any difference between the two units when it comes to battery life. I would assume that not having to power a HD with moving parts might help extend battery life a bit.

From the moment I press the power button it takes a total of 13 seconds to boot up. Majority of that time is from the bios bootup time.
Mickey thanks for the compliments. You better believe we will have a side by side video comparison of bootup times!
|
|
Probably super fast with the flash drive with superior battery life. Great combination.
Gee how about adding Windows Mobile 5 just for fun.
