Thanks, but can you confirm if the off the shelf full version of US tomtom 5 will let us install? The UK iPaq will already have 4.5 (or upgraded 5.1) installed and it might complain. The UK bundled TomTom software is in the ROM and can not be removed.
The ideal fix would be U.S. maps are available to buy. I dont see why it wouldnt work since the one free map download works. (I have san francisco working) http://www.tomtom.com/gpsnavigation/ says U.S. is "available soon"
The part that makes me nervous is when you try to buy maps, your billing system doesnt allow U.S. or dollars.

We cannot confirm if the full version Navigator 5 for the US will install to your device. If you are using a US map now, we do not see a problem. The reason for the US website stating "available soon" is due to our web store not being available. The web store should be available early August.
I've upgraded to TomTom 5.1, and have tried putting the SD card from my previous iPAQ into the hw6515. When starting TomTom 5 it states I need to activate map 'Great Britain', so I assume that it will quite happily accept country-wide map data from other versions of TomTom 5.
Sadly, I can't activate it to make sure it works, as it's already activated on my old 2210 iPAQ.
Why would a company that maps GPS software and devices cripple their own product unless HP made them or they are simply telling us BS here. I mean its kind of dumb to not allow it to work.
s4czech, don't worry about whether a site accepts U.S. dollars or Euros or pounds. When you order by credit card, the exchange is done automatically for you at what is generally a pretty good exchange rate. Often better than you can get when you are in the countries and trying to exchange currency as you pay no broker fees.
Certainly in the UK, paying for transactions in foreign currencies via credit cards does result in a (often very) good exchange rate, but they then slap a 2.5-3% 'handling' charge on the transaction as well, which can be quite pricey on a big purchase
Beyond the ability to purchase and have it converted, is the price for each map. $19 per city map is too high.
I would agree - hopefully they'll also offer a significant discount on bulk map area purchases - for example, I got the entire TomTom 5 European map set plus a wired GPS receiver for ~$280 for my previous iPAQ, and there's significantly more than 15 cities included!

The problem is, I can't pick "United States" as a country for when I try to fill in the billing address. They cant proccess my credit card with the wrong billing address.
And yeah, I would hope the "discounted maps" offer is highly discounted when they finally become available. I'd like to buy the hole west and east coast U.S. maps. (and also a few places in Candada)
Anyone confirm we can just buy the whole North America off the shelf version yet?
Not sure. I have emailed Delorme about their maps. It takes 4GB to hold all of the US maps they said so I would figure I could put parts of the country that I need and go. Still in a holding pattern until we find out more on the GPS software. HP is losing customers over this.
I also bought the Mobile Messenger to make use of the GPS. Had a Imate that I used Mapopolis on previously. There are a number of options available to purchase for Download.
With TomTom I've had the same problems. The best alternative to the problem is to use the Mapopolis software. It works TERRIFIC!!
Remember to set the Com Port to Port #7 and away you go.
I can't get the 5.1 to install on my UK 6510. It says unrecognized device even though I am using the UK 6510 with the 4.x version. I also can't get it to dwonload a map. It gets all the way to the download and an error pops up and I can't go any further. Earlier when I was trying I kept getting corrupt headers and CGI errors. Anyone have any ideas?
Hi there
I hope i didnt disturb you, but could you help me with the GPS functionality in my Ipaq 6515, it comes without GPS software, i dont know where from to buy the software and what to do?
Right now, it's either Navigon, Mapopolis, or Delorme (I think Mapopolis is the only one you can buy and download, the others you have to have shrinkwrap software shipped to you)
Check the link I sent you above to see sceen shots/reviews
I'm still confused about how to get the FULL version of TomTom for people like you.
