Default Date and MSN Messenger Update

The default date on some HP iPAQ Pocket PCs must be reset to use MSN Messenger

description

An issue with some HP iPAQ Pocket PC handheld devices requires you to set the date before you can logon to Microsoft MSN Messenger. By default, the device displays its date of manufacture. But if for any reason your Pocket PC is hard-reset, the date will revert to the default date.

This issue occurs because the MSN Messenger service is incompatible with the MSN Messenger software on your Pocket PC. When the issue occurs, an MSN error will display onscreen and you will be unable to complete your logon.

To check and/or revise the date on your HP iPAQ Pocket PC handheld device, perform the following steps:

Tap "Start," "Settings," "System," "Clock," and then "Time." If your current date information is incorrect, tap the date fields that are incorrect using the up and down arrows, and set the time correctly.

Tap "OK" and then "Yes" when the "Save changes to clock settings?" pop-up box display.

scope

This issue affects HP iPAQ Pocket PC handheld devices in the following series:

h1940 series (model h1940)

h2200 series

h4000 series

h5000 series

h6300 series

rx3000 series

rz1700 series

resolution

This Microsoft issue can be temporarily resolved by changing the default date on your HP iPAQ Pocket PC handheld device to your current date. Remember, however, that if your device is hard-reset, the date automatically returns to the default date. You must reset the date following each hard-reset.

HP will update this advisory if and when a permanent solution is identified.
