Live Mobile Sports Game

Exponentia and TSN Unveiled Live Mobile Sports Game at 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship

Exponentia and TSN launched a new mobile prediction game, entitled PlayAction, during TSN’s recent coverage of the popular 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. The joint venture, the latest initiative in a series of mobile developments between Exponentia and TSN, allowed hockey fans across Canada to predict every key moment of the tournament on their mobile phone.

The game was an instant success with more than 4,500 picks and 115,000 interactions occurring throughout the two-week tournament. To play, fans submitted their picks during the game via their mobile phone browser. Who will score the next goal? Will a power play goal be scored?

Fans were also able to make three PlayAction picks in advance of each game: Which team will score the first goal? Which team will get the first penalty? Which team will win the game?

Points were awarded for correct predictions, and the fan that racked up the most points over the span of the World Junior hockey tournament won a mobile phone with free airtime.

“The mobile phone is the perfect device for large-scale audience interactivity. Almost everyone already has one, and people carry their phones with them whether they are at home, at the sports bar, or in-stadium,” said Andrew Gregory, Principal at Exponentia. “Our objective for the platform is to have all live sports be PlayAction-enabled, wherever in the world they occur.”

“The World Junior hockey tournament was the ideal event to launch PlayAction. The timing couldn’t have been better with a country starved for hockey,” said Phil King, President, TSN. “Mobile data services is a relatively new venture for TSN and Exponentia has been an excellent partner in exploring this area with us.”

TSN’s coverage of the gold medal game from the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship attracted a national average minute audience of 3.2 million viewers*, making it the second most-watched program in TSN’s 20-year history. Audience levels peaked at 3.8 million viewers during the final 30 minutes of Canada’s 6-1 victory. TSN’s coverage of Team Canada’s six games averaged a record-setting 1.6 million viewers, making it the most successful World Junior tournament in TSN history.
