Palm Inc. is teaming up with Microsoft Corp. to launch a Windows-based version of the Treo smart phone, marking the first time that the pioneer of handheld computers is making one with software other than its beloved Palm platform.
The new 700 Treo will be offered through Verizon Wireless, according to industry sources we have spoken with.The three companies have scheduled a press conference for Monday. Representatives for Palm and Verizon Wireless declined to comment.
The new device will run on the Windows Mobile operating system, the long-time chief rival to the Palm operating system in the handheld computer market.
