SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 27, 2005 - i-mate USA, a specialist in Windows Mobile based devices and supportive applications, today announced the launch of the i-mate Charcoal JAM mobile phone for the U.S. market.

The new device was unveiled today at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2005, one of the wireless industry’s leading conferences and tradeshows being held at Moscone West in San Francisco September 27-29.

Following on the worldwide success of the original JAM, the Charcoal JAM includes all the advanced Windows Mobile features of the i-mate JAM, with twice the built-in memory at 128 MB. The new i-mate Charcoal JAM retains the same design and compact dimensions of the original JAM, which is the slimmest Pocket PC on the market, but comes in a distinguished charcoal color. The i-mate Charcoal JAM has a suggested retail price of $665. The original i-mate JAM will continue to be available at a suggested retail price of $649.

"Based on the tremendous response we received after our first handsets were launched in the U.S. six months ago, we are anticipating this new device will be very well-received by both retailers and consumers," said Jon Driscoll, president of i-mate USA. "The original JAM has been rated as one of the best Pocket PC mobile phones available, and we are eager to get this next version the JAM into the marketplace."

The i-mate Charcoal JAM is designed to help users keep in touch and be entertained on the move without the need for multiple devices. The device, powered by Windows Mobile Second Edition for Pocket PC, is Bluetooth compatible, features a 1.3 mega-pixel camera and video recorder and includes e-mail, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 10, Pocket Outlook (calendar and contacts), Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, mobile gaming, text messaging, multimedia messaging, MSN Messenger, a built-in voice recorder, hands-free speakerphone and integrated antenna.

The handset is an unlocked GSM/GPRS (tri-band) device that can operate on the Cingular and T-Mobile networks as well as any other GSM network. In addition to the i-mate Charcoal JAM and the i-mate JAM, i-mate also offers the i-mate SP3i, a Windows Mobile Second Edition smartphone. i-mate is a specialist in Windows Mobile™ device solutions and is dedicated to the collaborative design and development of fully certified, wireless handheld devices. i-mate USA, headquartered in San Diego, Calif., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Carrier Devices FZ LLC, which markets i-mate devices and technologies worldwide.

This device lacks more than the keyboard, it also lacks WiFi and from what I understand the camera on the JAMs has been less than stellar. The fact that any new device at this point which is not comming with WM5 makes it a non-option for me as well.
I don't necessarily need/want a keyboard also. I'd be more interested in this device if it had up'ed the ante with WM5 and revised specs.
This is essentially the same unit as my QTek S110. For someone who has no interest in a thumboard, which the K-Jam includes, this is a great little Pocket PC Phone.
I am waiting until the K-Jam or other manufacture version of the Wizard comes out. This Charcoal Jam is just a waste of time in my eyes.
