EXCLUSIVE - Palm Treo 700W Memory Allocation Explanation

You asked for an explanation --- so here is the scoop!

Palm Treo 700w Memory

The Palm Treo 700w smartphone ships with a total memory of 128 MB of Flash ROM and 32 MB of SDRAM.

The use of the 128MB of flash ROM is broken down as follows:

• 60 MB is dedicated user storage for installing third party applications or personal data files (this is denoted under "Storage" in the memory mgmt app) AND

• The remaining memory is used to store the Windows Mobile operating system, as well as Palm and mobile operator applications (this is not denoted in the memory management app because it isn't user accessible).

"Programs" in the Memory management application refers to available SDRAM. The Treo 700w supports 32MB of SDRAM of which a portion SDRAM is protected to support core device peripherals and functionality like capturing a 1.3MP image. This is true for all Windows Mobile products.

The remaining SDRAM, displayed as Total Program memory (25MB), is used to meet the run time needs of the system (drivers and in ROM applications) as well as third party applications.

To view the memory management application, press the OK key for several seconds and click the Main tab.

this is really a disappointment that the device is so low on ram...pocketpctechs...where are you!
Well I finally set up my 4smartphone.net account to sync my MAC (some quirks but working on it) and ouch the memory goes bye bye and no quiting apps helps only a soft reset. More RAM please.
"Memory Hog #1 is Voice Command. Turn it off as it doesn't work well with a Bluetooth headset anyway."

I beg to differ. It works great on my WM5 device. The only caveat is when you want to wake the device out of suspend mode. I can get it to work by initiating a re-dial of the last number and then cancel the call.

Having to initiate a call without VC can be a PIA especially when driving.

Wireless Sync is also a hog (2-3 mb). Don't keep it constantly on. Enable it when you want to view new mail.
That's kinda ironic, isn't it? Palm includes a copy of VC for free and it winds up chewing up memory almost to the point of making the device unusable.
The big memory hog is Voice Command. If you never invoke it the memory level stays over 10 MB with nothing else running.
Thanks Chris!!
Wow. That's pathetic. There is no excuse for that.
When was the last time you did a soft reset?
FYI... its posted on the front page now...
1.89MB... that's all I have free. 1.89MB. There's something definitely wrong with this memory confiruration, IMHO.

Thanks for getting us this info, guys... Please look for a cross post back to your site from pocketnow.com.
