I upgraded to WM5 on my IPAQ 4700. I'm shocked at how horribly it runs. I spoke with one of the customer support representatives at HP and he mentioned that this is due to the fact that WM5 runs on RAM and not on ROM as the previous version did. Nevertheless, they should have notified customers that it would run like an XT desktop did back in the late 80s. really...this should not happen with an $800 gadget! I'm hugely disappointed after using my IPAQ everyday for about a year and-a-half now. Way to screw up a perfectly great deal. I've since restored my previous settings (back to pocket PC 2003) and it works once again...but that still leaves a $50.00 hole in the pocket for yet another useless Microsoft invention. Bravo!

Can only agree with what Acebandge wrote earlier. WM5 for 4700 really sucks. The performance is very poor. Feels like i'm back on my old Compaq 8570 with PPC2002. What i cant understand is why the screen response is soooo sloooow. Who needs all the new features if the device is so slow that you do not whant to spend another minute with it...
Is this the final blow for PPC, I wonder...

I love my 4700, I've had it since it came out in 04. I use it with my bluetooth GPS reciever in the car and it works great, but since I upgraded it to WM5 it runs painfully slow and even locks up. I am thinking about upgrading the ram to 128. PPC techs can do it for 129$ but since the 4700 uses the higher speed ram, it is non-stackable and can only go to 128.
Anyone else heard different?

I am having second thoughts about this upgrade. If the 802.11 and Bluetooth are both on the blue LED never shuts off even if I turn the unit off. I turned off the Bluetooth and and the unit battery only lasted two days in standby. I will probably to back to Pocket PC 2003 SE.

I upgraded to WM5 and found the performance much slower than WM2003SE, also I had issues where my CF storage card wouldn't be recognized propertly and any programs running from them would fail.
I've downgraded the hx4700 back to WM2003, and I am much happier now that the unit performace is back to what it should be.

Ok, I feel stupid...what's this MD5Checksum? What is SWLIST? what is SWINSTALL? Do I need to concern myself with it if WM5 completed downloading successfully?

I got WM5 up and running perfectly yesterday. What really surprised me was to see a bad program I wrote for PocketPC 2002 still working ;)

Got it installed along with my programs. Did a soft reset and it would get to the boot screen and just sit there. Doing a hard reset now...

Stuka,
Don't fight the change. WM5 on new devices works just fine. Are there some issues? Yes. But it is a substantial improvement over prior versions of the OS. I should know, I have owned a device with every single version of the PPC OS since it's inception and progression from WinCE.
My WM5 K-JAM is a productive and stable device. I think your concern should be more pointed to the OEM's implementation of the ROM components rather than WM5 itself.

I strongly recommend you read the forums regarding Mobile 5 and its issues before upgrading. the issue also involves other brands of PDA with Mobile 5. In am in need of a new PDA, but refuse to buy one with Mobile 5 until a tried and true update to the OS is avialable.

I was able to download and install the upgrade without a problem. The download includes Pocket PC 2003 SE ROM image incase you decide you don't like WM5 and want to go back.

The order page says it is CD. SO, does one purchase a CD or download or both? Also, does the download include Windows Mobile 2003SE ROM version, so that we can roll back the upgrade if necessary?
