Hands On: SlingBox for Windows Mobil

Our hands on experience

I am so happy that everyone now can experience what I have been using as part of the beta team. SlingMedia announced today that Slingbox for Windows Mobile is now AVAILABLE! Here is the gameplan! If you have a Slingbox or thinking of getting one you are in business!

Product is free for registered Slingbox customers both new and existing if purchased by April 26th. Anyone that has a Slingbox or buys a Slingbox will need to register it to get a coupon code. The build that is available starting tonight will expire on the 26th and you can use the unlock code to get the new, final build after the 26th.

Anyone that wants SlingPlayer Mobile after April 26th will have to pay 29.99 for it.

Here is the Sling on my Palm Treo 700w showing my DirectTV Guide!

Ok my second favorate team the Jets on the NFL channel using EVDO on my Treo 700w

I love this feature. If you are driving just connect the earphone jack to a FM Transmitter and you can listen to your favorate TV channel!

Now I know you all think Orb can do this but can you setup your Tivo to record from Orb? Nope!

A word here for mobile sling users who are trying to install the mobile software from a location away from the home network where the slingbox is physically located. I surprisingly found that the mobile slingplayer will not work until you upgrade the firmware on the slingbox from within the home network where the slingbox resides. My sister in England was able to hotsync and load the moblie slingplayer onto her iPAQ hx2415 pocket pc, however she could not get her mobile sling player to broadcast tv until after I upgraded the firmware of her slingbox from within the network of it's physical location here in New York. Has anyone out there encountered anything different?
Hey Mr. Orb Marketing, the mobile sling player is free for those who purchased a slingbox before I believe April 26th, and even if Sling charges afterward the price of the device will probably come down (it already has), so it's probably gonna be a wash for one of the most enjoyable mobile applications today. It's always good to know what all the vendors offer, thanks for the Orb information!
Hey, David.

Actually, you CAN program your TiVo from your phone using Orb - or rather, using the Orb Add-On known as DVR Everywhere, available for free over at http://www.dvreverywhere.com and also at http://www.orb.com/get_orb/add_ons/

And you can do that even from the tens of millions of mobile phones that aren't WinMo - any Web device with a streaming player.

But it IS great to see Sling get to Windows Mobile devices, and we'll certainly all be watching, I'm sure, to see what kind of uptake there is after the price tag gets slapped on the mobile app (Orb access from your mobile device, like the main Orb app for your WinXP box itself, remains free).

Looks like some EDGE users are giving a relative "thumbs up" on the performance:

Although the SlingMedia spec requirments say windows 2003 pocket pc version 2 is required, it also works on windows 2003 pocket pc version 1 as long as you upgrade your MS ActiveSync to version 3.8 (free upgrade from MS). Works great on my Dell Axim X3! Yipee!!!
It did work on my hw6515...
According to some posts on the http://www.slingcommunity.com forums, at least 3 folks on WM 2003 First Edition report it working for them as well.

It's WM 5 and 2003 SE. I downloaded the beta this morning and it works nice on my rx3715 via wifi. Too bad they don't have a Blackberry version for my 7130e w/ EVDO!
phillykish check the sling site for all the devices supported.
I have been on the beta since the beginning of the year as well... and my 6700 LOVES this app!
It was an extremely well run BETA as well... and a great company.
This product is a real winner for sure as the company and Beta team did a killer job.
Usage under EDGE isn't bad. After optimization (about 1 minute) the video and audio stream pretty well. The experience is better under WiFi or EVDO obviously. But still decent quality under EDGE....given you have connected at a decent speed.
Is it only Windows Mobile 5, or Windows Moble 2003 SE as well? I would use it with my iPAQ 4700.
Cool. I assume that you'll be showing both EVDO and Edge?
Video Podcast coming out today Jerry!
That's great. But what's the experience like over an Edge connection? It's important to remember that Cingular is the largest network in the US and it's probably the minority that actually have 3G connection speeds that EVDO provides.
Hands down the best Windows Mobile Experience!
