Bluetooth DUN with the Blackjack

Many of you already know I am completely sold on my new Cingular Blackjack! Well my next mission was to get DUN to work over Bluetooth! Consider it done. Now I need to get it to work on the Mac.. But in the meantime you will need the following:

  1. BlackJack (Samsung i607)
  2. PDA Data plan
  3. Bluetooth adapter
  4. Windows XP SP2's Bluetooth stack (others may work, not tested yet)

Step 1: Pair the computer and your Blackjack using steps discussed in the manual.

Step 2: Launch the "Internet Sharing" application on your BlackJack. It can be found in the \Windows folder. (To locate it: Start -> Applications -> File Explorer -> \Windows -> Internet Sharing)

Step 3: Choose "Bluetooth PAN" as the PC connection, and "MEdia Net" as the network connection

Step 4: Hit "Connect" (left soft key)

Step 5: On the PC, go to Start > Network Connections. Click on the "Bluetooth network connection" icon. Choose your BlackJack, and hit Connect.

OK. This will make everyone who has a blackjack's life SO much easier.

There is a registry setting that will enable to bluetooth PAN (Internet sharing) to start as soon as the device is turned on. It is a registry hack, so if those two words scare you, do not continue.

First you need to download mobile registry editor. (Available here: http://www.breaksoft.com/Blog/Utilities/2005/1/Mobile_Registry_Editor.aspx)

Second step is to start a synchronization. This works with bluetooth activesync and with a usb cable.

Next, open the Mobile Registry Editor. Go to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\PAN

You will see a registry entry that says "ActivateOnBoot" the data value is set at 0. Change it to 1. After you do this, close Mobile Registry Editor.

Reset your phone and you are set! This edit means that you no longer have to use file explorer to navigate to the link described in this article! It is done for you! This adjustment also won't interfere with any USB settings. If for some reason, you still need usb for some reason you are home free.
David Ciccone,

I have media max200 data plan
(some people were able to use internet with USB with this plan)

I could not find "Internet Sharing" in \Windows folder. Any comments?

What Dave describes here is not Bluetooth DUN; it's Bluetooth PAN. DUN is a specific Bluetooth profile (protocol) that is not supported in the Blackjack's Bluetooth stack.

The good news is that PAN is easier to set up than DUN if your OS supports it. Instead of your phone appearing as a modem, requiring PPP and dialer scripts, PAN makes it appear to the OS as an Ethernet device, just like your built-in network adapter.

From what I can tell, OS X's Bluetooth stack doesn't support PAN. At least, I've been unsuccessful at finding anything about PAN in the Bluetooth section of http://docs.info.apple.com/. If it were supported, it would probably show up as a network device once paired with the phone, and once the Internet Sharing applet is connected.

I had little trouble getting this working on a Gentoo Linux system using the open-source Bluez Bluetooth stack. Just fire up pand, then start dhcpcd on bnep0.
update: blackjack DUN via USB to MB Pro w/OSX 10.4.8 works at 1.3Mbps dn/120Kpbs dn on Cingular 3G w/4bars. Modem Script: Sprint PCS Vision (ignore indicated modem speed of 230400 bps). Phone Settings/Connections/USB must be set to "modem".

Can't get it to work via BT, however. David?
The Blackjack is great, even without viewing with Pocket Word and Excel. The pluses outweight the negatives I'd say. I'm using my Blackjack as the modem for my IBM Laptop. So quick and easy it was. I'll head to my local computer store later toda to get a bluetooth adapter and get rid of the USB. What a device!
david,
do keep us posted on this - blackjack DUN on Mac OS X 10.4.8 - haven't been able to have the phone show up as a modem on my mac - will also be interested in what modem script you find best.

good luck!
