Ballmer: No Zune Phone

"It's not a concept you'll ever get from us. We're in the Windows Mobile business. We can put Zune into Windows Mobile, we can put Xbox into Windows Mobile. We can pour everything in.

So the Big M is much more likely to beef up Windows Mobile with some Zune-like features than try to cram phone-features into the Zune. Good move, guys. As the CEO of RIM said at CTIA this year, email is pretty much the baseline for smartphones these days. So it makes a lot more sense to take the simpler device and integrate it into the one that already does email (not to mention everything else) than the other way around.

I agree. Windows Mobile as it is now is pretty powerful and can be both business oriented or entertainment oriented. It's not really a question of features because again, Windows Mobile as it is now can do everything a Zune can. The Zune, however, is a dedicated mobile entertainment device so naturally it's going to excel in what it was intended to do. The big issue, however, is the GUI. Then again look at how many developers have made PPC versions of the iPhone GUI. Look at all the alternative media players available for WM. If MS can get their act together and push the WM GUI towards a more practical, user friendly, eye pleasing direction - a step it kind of took with WM6 - then I can see customers opting for the WM do it all solution over the dedicated media Zune.
