No Windows Mobile 6 for iPAQ 6900 series

Cnet Asia is reporting that HP users will not get WM6 upgrades for the iPaq hw6900, rw6800, rx4000 and rx5000 series of handhelds. The computer giant cited “the potential for long delays, as well as possible carry-over costs” to its customers as reasons for this decision. These devices will continue to be offered to customers with Windows Mobile 5.0 installed.

HP’s future devices will come with the new OS though, starting with the HP iPaq 512 Voice Messenger smart phone which features WM6 Standard.

Granted, they have certainly shifted focus to the enterprise market. However, the PPC group demonstrates an arrogance that reflects either a total lack of interest in this market or a total lack of understanding on how to maintain and grow market share. If they had leveraged their IPAQ brand and history with Microsoft's demonstrated committment to move Exchange to the "push" email model they could have been the serious alternative to RIM's BlackBerry platform. MS did - HP did not. I too think HP has permanently lost this market. Look at HTC's growth - HP could have stayed in the driver's seat.

The irony of this to me is that it took Dell to wake up HP in the PC/Laptop/Server arena - and they did wake up and make tremendous progress. They don't even seem to care about the strategic importance of the handheld device market.

I can't say I understand that decision but their actions speak for themselves.
Actually, I am thanking HP at this point. After the WM5 fiasco, I just saved myself hundreds of hours of lost time. It would have been vastly cheaper - opportunity cost wise - to buy a brand new device than the trauma I went through to upgrade my hx4700. I learned more than I ever wanted to know in order to get the thing working acceptably. There is no doubt in my mind that any WM6 upgrade HP issued would have been just another poorly implemented headache.

Rest assured, once my hw6945 and hx4700 die, I will probably buy from another manufacturer. This is after owning four models of iPAQs and numerous other HP products for the last 25 years.

Customer for life? Not after being treated like this.

Once again HP confirms why customers should NOT look to them for their next converged device, they simply don't support you. If you have a GSM carrier buy from HTC directly and you would be happier.
I told you FallN a long time ago..... ;)
With the wa they've been acting-- removing Outlook from all Getting Started CDs-- this doesn't surprise me.

It's just really pathetic and just sad. HP is the only major player that hasn't offered an upgrade to at least one of their current devices and with the 6900 series being their "top of the line", there's no excuse for at least that device getting the upgrade.

HP has been showing their true colors in regards to their PPC division and I'm not digging the look. I'll be hence forth taking my PPC business elsewhere and I know I'm not the only one.

HP, your shafting of your loyal customers over WM6 is the last straw.
I do NOT wonder - HP has a more or less unique stand in the market, also why should they care about customers?
No surprise there. I knew it. A load of malarkey if you ask me. Of all the shafts (WM2003->WM2003SE, 6500) that HP has pulled, I think this is the worst. There's no reason in the world why every other major phone device can be upgraded and a 6900 can't.
