Dave in your message to Laura is switching to iPhone going to get you WM6. I don't understand the rational?
Concerning the drop test - do you think dropping a glass screen device from 3ft is going to be undamaged? Duh.
For the iPhone I would wait a few months for the refurbs. They will be coming back by the thousands.
And why is everyone bashing AT&T for having the EDGE network. It was iPhone's decision to not use 3G technology. AT&T has 3G networks, it works for devices that include the technology. Blame Apple for a lack of foresite or is it a marketing ploy to have a future revenue stream to charge more for 3G iPhones?

Phys,
The problem is Samsung, not Cingular. The Treo and 8525 are due for upgrades.

For someone like me, there is no way I could affoerd to have a phone that could break so easily. Being in the military, I am in the field on a regular basis and I have put my 8525 through hell and back and it has stood up to the punishment like a champ, it has been dropped from 10ft, kicked, stepped on, rattled around on the floor of a Hummer, and the best one yet, left on top of my hummer overnight in the rain, all that with very minor scratches to the body and no scratching no the screen. I cant imagine having a phone that I have to baby and woory about not working. When we are in the field and actually gt coverage, this is my only connection to the outside world, sometimes for weeks on end.
I just could not be dissconnected becasue I dropped my device.

Dave, is Samsung the problem or Cingular. If Cingular, then what would make you think that things would be different with the iPhone regarding updates and the like? You do use Macs for desktop anyway though right? Please do a review of it when you do get it though!

It will be an issue, as I already stated, for those who do NOT already use iTunes. ;)

I think I must have a rock in my head - I have promised my son one for his birthday which is tomorrow - he plans on camping out outside the Apple store on the night of the 28th. As he was in a bad car crash last week, I would do anything for him - including buying an not yet reviewed iPhone.

'what are your plans from stopping the dreaded scratch, drop or fall?'
It's called a nice case. :)
The iTunes account won't even be an issue - there are already over 100 million plus iTunes users! :)

Not to mention the necessary slow EDGE data plan, as well as the iTunes account for those who do not already use iTunes.
Anyone catch this from C-Net?:

Oh man, why doesn't this surprise me.
People have rocks in their heads to go comit $600 and 2 years to be the first to have an iPhone without waiting for reviews, comments, and experiences.
I've never owned a phone that I didn't drop at least a few times, and none are as slick as the iPhone. My Treo 750 and Cingular 8525 have fared crazy drops on concrete without much more than a few scratches.
Well that's asthetics gets you instead of good reasonable industrial design.
That is, if this fragility rumor is true.
I want to see the iPhone shine and succeed, but this is not a good thing.
So I guess the iPhone didn't pass the standard drop test... or did they even perform one?
