Time Magazine - iPhone invention of the year

Not to bad for a mere TOY!

Love it or hate it the iPhone is time Magazine's invention of the year. The article  by LEV GROSSMAN gives five reasons why the iPhone got the top spot for 2007.

They include:

1. The iPhone is pretty

2. It's touchy-feely

3. It will make other phones better

4. It's not a phone, it's a platform

5. It is but the ghost of iPhones yet to come

I think Lev got it right. While it is not the device for everyone it sure has changed the way that device manufacturers are looking at new devices. since the iPhone was announced many of the other OEM's have scrambled to keep up and add features that incorporate the look and feel of the iPhone.

So are there any winners or losers in the Apple vs. Windows Mobile fight? I don't think so. The iPhone has raised the bar and caused the other OEM's to step it up a notch. With this type of innovation war everybody wins.

You can read the whole article and get Lev's  in depth thoughts on each of the five points over at Time Magazine

Thanks to JNGold for passing this along

While i agree the iPHONE has really raised the bar for other converged devices, it is Apple's marketing that deserves credit here. The phone itself isn't really anything special except for the "wow" factor of the touch interface, you can't even MMS on the iPHONE.
They are clearly judging more on hype and public horah, than on actual technical merrit. Color me no where near that impressed with what iPhone brings to the table as a whole device. That's my take on it.
"Phone of the year"...definitely, "Gadget of the year"...of course, but invention of the year? That means that there was nothing more important invented the whole year? I don't know if it was or if it wasn't, but I find that hard to believe. I mean it can't even view the iLounge guide offline (natively).
Gotta love that "ghost of iPhones to come!"
