"...it is role of the OS to allow for protected memory sessions which prevent one app from crashing the whole device."
This is true, the question is how well will iPhone OS deal with these issues. That will not be known until they release the SDK update and have quite a bit of SDK software under the belt without reset necessity. At that point I would have to say that regarding the stability of the OS, Apple has others beat.

Phys,
We agree in principle. However, keep in mind Apple's own applications were coded via the API's provided in the SDK, with one major exception...allowing multitasking capability. If developers maintain a strict adherence to the sdk (not trying to code work arounds to circumvent sdk limitations), then I think the platform will remain stable. However, there is no excuse or exception for poor coding but in that case, it is role of the OS to allow for protected memory sessions which prevent one app from crashing the whole device.
As for the Safari, very rarely did I have sites close down the app. In the rare case that would happen, clearing the cache usually solved the problem.
As for your last comment, I have made no secret that I might not get another WM device. While I am fully enjoying my TC, I may have to think long and hard about my next device. Months ago, I was considering an S60 N95 to replace my Treo. When I found the application shortage for things I need and want to do on s60, I didn't give the platform any more consideration. Likewise, when the time comes to replace my TC, I will consider platforms like the iPhone and make the determination to go with it based on the hardware and software capabilities.

JN, I agree that the OS on the iPhone is more current than the OS for Palm. However, the iPhone's OS will be different when it is updated with 2.0 than it was before 2.0. Really, the jury is still out regarding the stability of the OS with supported 3rd party software. If your wanting to compare Apple to Apples regarding stability, you need to have the same features for both OSes. Specifically, both with the native ability to support 3rd party software. We already know that you can hack a device to make it more stable, so saying that the hacked 3rd party applications work on the iPhone without making it unstable does not indicate ANYTHING about how well the OS will be NATIVELY supporting 3rd party apps. Case in point, my Wing is not stable with 3rd party apps out of the box. I needed to hack it by skipping the T-Mo Crapimization step and run a simple page pool size changer. Using another simple and free tool, Total Commander, I installed the items from T-Mo that I wanted and skipped the rest. Since then I installed the HTC home screen and have not had to reset my device in almost a week now. Still going strong and maintaining RAM memory.
Ok, what sites have you had Safari close you out to the home screen on Chris or JN? One of the experiences with one of my customers was that his Safari was closing out on certain websites. I had him do a soft reset and Safari was able to go to some of the sites after, although some others kept closing it out which to me meant that the code on the site was just not compatible with the Safari browser. Of coarse with the latest updates on the firmware, he hardly ever experiences that anymore, which is where I give props to Apple for fixing their OS in a most expedient fashion. That is one thing I would love to experience from MS but feel like they just do not give a crap about their WM consumers regarding that. That is a big issue for me which is why I am not buying another WM device until either they change their ways or another device comes along to suit my needs, whichever comes first.

I have honestly never had a problem with Safari freezing the device. I would like to know what sites you have seen the problems with so I can try it out. I have had Safari close back to the home screen a few times but I can honestly say I have never had to reset the device.

"Palms have to be reset quite a bit, so if Apple does it the way Palm is doing it, get ready for the resets. Contrary to Chris's experience there are plenty of people who do have to reset the iPhone due to Safari freezing from non-compatible sites."
Comparing the Palm OS and iPhone is like comparing Apples and Oranges (heh! No pun intended!)
First and foremost the version of the iPhone OS (based on OS X) is way more advanced than the Palm OS. OS X from the ground up is a modern OS. Many issues experienced by Palm users were caused due to the inflexible nature of the original Palm OS code and the constant patching and re-patching of the OS to keep bringing it forward with features. Also, Palm had a notorious history of not communicating with its developer community which meant app developers were on their own when it came to coding apps.
Safari resets (at least in my experience) are very few and far between. My experience with it on the iPod has been that if Safari did have an issue, it would close down but not affect the rest of the device, meaning that a full reset of the touch was not necessary.

Steve, MS is already saying "WM what???" Nice to see we are finally putting the responsibility of updating and supporting WM on MS where it belongs.
I am using the T-Mobile Wing. I am also ticked about lack of MS support on WM.
Palms have to be reset quite a bit, so if Apple does it the way Palm is doing it, get ready for the resets. Contrary to Chris's experience there are plenty of people who do have to reset the iPhone due to Safari freezing from non-compatible sites.
My Wing did not have issues with DST. LOL, Jerry, that is an interesting correlation between the more money that Dave spent and him getting less quality for the device.
I use the Live Search, I like that software. Otherwise, I do not use any of the other Live products. Coverflow to me is a good way to take more time to get the the song you want.
Steve Balmer was not screaming Web Developers for iPhone. Where on earth are you getting that from Dave?
Waaaay tooo much information about Dave's bathroom usage of the Jasjar! lol
