Another hands on with HTC Diamond - Buggy

Our very own moderator and podcaster Mickey Papillon of The Cellphone Junkie was lucky enough to receive an HTC Diamond for review and unfortunately it looks like he validates what we have been saying. He experienced almost 9+ soft resets in just one day and has been twittering his experiences. This device was offered to him by Tad from MsMobiles who received his from attending Mobius a Microsoft sponsored event.

Some of his quotes:
I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an HTC Diamond from Tadd Rosenfeld of msmobiles.com and mytreo.net One of the things that I like most about the community of bloggers and podcasters is that they work together and help each other. Tadd was kind enough to send me this device that was given to him to try out, and after a few initial hours, here are my impressions.
  1. Speed: What the heck is going on HTC? The device reminds me of using my original Motorola Q. It seems to only register some of the key presses I make, and there are these random pauses all the time that are annoying to say the least. I constantly find myself pressing the screen multiple times because I think the original press didn’t work, and of course then it closes the box underneath the one I was trying to close as well. There are some odd things going on with this Touch Flo 3D, and I don’t know if I am going to get used to it.

  2. Battery: Well, I now know how the 900mAh battery is going to hold up. Not well. The thing was only good for about 2.5 hours of me working with it tonight. Granted it was a solid 2.5 hours, but I do a lot of email on my phone and I don’t know if this is going to work out for an entire day. In fact as I was typing this post, the thing just completely shut off. Great, only gave me 1 low battery warning then poof…

  3. Enhancements: HTC has added in many enhancements to the OS that seem to be very nice. I like the plethora of programs that are included, a nice touch.

  4. Connection:
No problems using AT&T on EDGE here in Arizona. Granted, there is only 1900Mhz in the phone for the US, but this is fine for me day to day as we don’t have 850 here. Speeds are decent, but nothing like my Treo. Too bad they didn’t include HSDPA support for 1900/850.
  5. Surface: Just looking at the surface of the thing after spending all this time with it and it looks all smeary. Going to be tough keeping it clean. But then again, most devices with the surfaces like this one are.
I also recommend you listen to the latest MsMobiles podcast as you can hear first hand Mickey's frustration during this weeks show. You will also hear one of our cohosts Mike Manna of T4Show was also a guest of the podcast

OK, new software/firmware helps. Better than before, but not perfect.
i'm just crossing my fingers for a rom upgrade before it goes out to providers.
i still don't get these manufacturers, are they stupid or something? todays's link

showing some fixes for the phone shows how if they really wanted to and spent two minutes longer they could actually make good products.
9+ resets in a day? Sounds like my Mogul. Is it July 11th yet???
Samsung i900 looks to be the next device out with possibilities.

Looks very responsive from videos. Could be my next device until the X1.....
Matt Miller who attended Mobius stated he thought he had a newer ROM but Mickey just confirmed that wasn't the case.
Dave, didn't you mention in a previous podcast that HTC said you had an older ROM version. If that is the case, then doesn't this speak volumes about their credibility and integrity since all the Diamonds given out at Mobius would naturally have the same ROM version.
Mickey I have the same ROM! Very Very Buggy!
Prospective Touch Pro owners better hope that HTC does optimize TF3D, otherwise it will be another dog.

How amusing is it that SE should play a major role by jumping into the WM market? I know HTC will make the hardware, but SE will (hopefully) make the necessary changes to give a more-fluid use of WM customizations than what is being offed by TF3D. Funny, they did the same for the Palm OS with their Clie line of devices.
Forget about optimizing the software. You will get menial improvements at best. When is someone going to review something that is worth it, and at the very least made for use in the US? Diamond Pro, X1 anyone?
Heh....doesn't surprise me in the least. HTC has alot to do in terms of optimizing TF3D.
Honestly, I need to give it some more time before totally writing it off. The work week will be very telling for me. We'll see if I can manage to survive on an EDGE only device!
I wonder what Matt Miller would say about this review.
its kinda like pulling teeth with this thing. you can get it to do things but takes a while. took me five minutes to get logged into the site trough opera and that is over wifi.
1.35.401.3 wwe date is 5/28/08 is that the same you have?
Like putting a dress on a pig. (JNGold 2008)
Sorry Mickey I was hoping your experience would be different. Can you post your ROM version?
