Long Day's Journey Into Night

or how I switched from Palm to Windows Mobile

Moving from the simple Palm OS to Windows Mobile was not an easy decision. It has, of course, been tempered by the knowledge that I can go back any time I want. The biggest downside is that the move has cost me my casino money for the next three months, and I haven't begun to buy accessories yet.

The most difficult part of the entire experience has been converting to Outlook. I have successfully avoided Outlook for years, but there is no simple way to sync a WM device without it. I have quite contentedly been using the Palm desktop for all my hotsync needs for years. I initiated a sync when I was ready, and all my pim data was always safe. With WM, not only do you get the pleasure of using Outlook (she said sarcastically), but the joy of ActiveSync.

I must confess, I don't truly grok ActiveSync. Yes, I understand that it's nice to keep my handheld and my desktop in constant sync, but I'd rather have just a little more control over it. What if I just want to charge my device? What if I'm trouble-shooting an app and adding meetings or contacts just for testing purposes and don't actually want to save them? Better yet, what if I have the ability to take more control over ActiveSync and make it PASSIVE sync, and just haven't figured out how yet?! Being a newbie is no fun.

So the first day (prior to actual receipt of my Treo 800w) was spent moving my pim data from the Palm desktop to Outlook. Palm made that simple enough. I just don't particularly care for Outlook - it's too busy. One of the things I will be looking for over the next few days/weeks is an alternative. When my Treo 800w finally arrived, it was as simple as plugging it in to the usb port on my laptop, establishing a partnership (sounds like a legal agreement to me!) with ActiveSync, and populating my new device with my old data.

The next step was to make it look and feel as familiar as possible by arranging the Today screen (replacing my friendly Palm os launcher) and buttons. Arranging the Today screen was easy enough. Mine now almost looks like my Centro using UltimatePhone. My first real disappointment (outside of Outlook) was that I lose the one-handed capability that I loved so much with Palm os using the hard keys. Why must I press and hold the option button before tapping the mail key on WM? That requires both hands. Why can't I press option followed by mail to go to messaging? I understand that we hold key combinations on a pc, but a handheld isn't a pc and shouldn't be constrained by desktop configurations.

This concludes my initial observations on making the change from Palm to WM. I welcome suggestions, advice, corrections…in other words, any help anyone is willing to offer. Next time: applications.

Hi Alli. Good move on the OS. Yesterday I was asked which I prefered. I didn't answer fast because each OS has it's benifits depending on a customer's needs. But for me personally it's how much fun the OS allows me to have. You already know I love tinkering. And presently I've got a ways to go with WM. (I just decided to pick up what I can on the BlackBerry side, but THAT is going to take time I don't have right now.) Talk to you later.
Using Outlook Calendar, Notes, Tasks and e-mail with the PalmOs Outlook Conduit (bundled with Palm Treo 700p as Palm Desktop 4.2) to keep WM devices in sync on multiple desktops easy. After several migrations to newer Laptops, I am still using the same Device ID. I actually still use my old Palm OS 4.1 model m505 explictly for that purpose on my Office 2003 and Office 2007 systems. Just follow the advice on the Palm Support Center.

My experience in WM stops at Active Sync 3.8, since I haven't had any reason to get ahead of that version with Windows XP SP2.
I started my "mobile device" addiction using Handspring Visors. I quickly outgrew the Palm OS as I found that Windows Mobile (Pocket PC's) were better extensions of both my work and personal desktop computers than what was then offered by the Palm OS.

Times since then have changed and people less frequently want to have connection with their PC's and rely on the "cloud" to get information to and from their devices. However, I still like being able to just plug in a WM device to a PC and be able to navigate, copy files to and from, and interact with the device just like any other drive.
Thanks Brat! I like Spb Mobile Shell, but it had some issues with WM6.1 when I last tried it...mainly showdowns.
Thanks brat. I actually started a forum thread about applications. I'd love to get some more insight in there.
Alli amd MHerald congrats on joining Mobilitytoday. It costs money, but recently I started using SPB Mobile Shell on my Tilt, and over all I like the experience. It's a lot more touch friendly then Window Mobile alone, and the menu groupings are pretty good. Just a suggestion. Again congrats.
I really can't say right now. I'm still in the thrall of the newness of the device. We'll see if it holds.
Ok I see what you mean...maybe it was your wording. I have a today plugin and just press on that to go to my messaging. There are several today plugins for WM to make things like that much easier.

I like Pocket Informant because it has a touch mode which works perfectly on my Touch. Maybe when a new version of Agendus comes out with that feature then I will give it a try.

You might want to give Resco File Explorer 2008 a try. It is very nice and again it has an optimized touch mode. :)

So do you think you will go back to your Centro?
If an app is mapped to a hard key, you press the hard key. If an app is mapped as the alternate to the hard key, you press (and hold) option and hard key.

I don't believe Agendus currently has a touch mode, but it's still evolving for Windows Mobile.
I personally like to keep my device in constant sync with my desktop. Maybe that is why I never cared for PalmOS devices. And I never had problems adding appointments to my device while connected to my PC. Both the calendar on my desktop and exchange server get updated with no hiccups. What do you mean by press and hold the option button before tapping the mail key on WM? Why do you have to do that? I tap once on the screen and it goes to my messaging.

Also, does Agendus have a "Touch mode" interface? In other words, does it allow the use of finger gestures?
