HTC confirm no Touch HD for the USA

HTC have just confirmed via Twitter that the Touch HD will not be coming to the USA at all. This is sad news as Windows Mobile needs a device like this to compete with the iPhone. You will be able to use an imported Touch HD as it has cleared the FCC however the age old problem of not having the US 3G bands will cripple the device to only Edge data speeds.

What I've read on other blogs is that HTC doesn't think the "extra engineering" required to provide U.S. 3G bands is worth it. Of course, anyone that knows the inside of these phones knows that HTC doesn't do the engineering, that's left mostly to Qualcomm and TI these days. In fact, HTC could simply put the antenna multiplexer and analog stage chips used in the U.S. version of the Diamond in the HD to get an AT&T 3G compatible version. (Both Qualcomm and TI make their mobile phone chip sets "mix and match" for just this purpose, so that aggregators like HTC can customize devices for various markets on the assembly line, not in the design department.)

Given how "forthcoming" HTC has been about band compatibility with the original GSM Touch and Diamond, I know what the folks over at XDA are going to be doing over the holidays.

I still believe creating a HD with U.S. AT&T and T-Mobile 3G bands is not a hardware or cost issue. Obviously there's a lot more going on between HTC and the U.S. carriers than meets the eye. And lack of U.S. 3G on the HD won't stop me from importing one!
I could give a ratts @ss about competing with the "Fruit Phone" I just need these mfrs. to stop ignoring US and only releasing the good stuff in Europe and Asia. Although, we simply just do not have the same demand for technology that those two countries do and it shows.
I don't need a HD with a carrier. I don't like carrier devices anyways. Just give me the opportunity to buy a US-spec device via online or brick-and-mortar retail and that would be just fine with me.

If the HD is truly not coming anywhere near US shores, then HTC better get started leaking the next kick-butt design that is due for this market and will be meant to compete head-to-head with the "Fruit Phone!"
Phys I have asked HTC to participate in the podcast and they stated they would consider it. Let's give them some time to explain.
Everyone wants this phone and they don't want to bring it to the US. what can we do to let them know that we want this phone but with Google Android :)
Funny, I just called the lady after reading your post and she was maintaining what she told me before.

This is the number I am calling for HTC America:

4256795318

What number did you call Benjitek?
I called and the lady told me it was coming to T-Mobile in Q1
Crap, crap, crap. I say boycott HTC, they don't need us and we do not need them. No one should bother buying an imported HD that will not work for 3G over here.
Here is a funny thing:

I called HTC America and the lady who answered the phone said that HTC had no plans for HD coming here. I then asked if the next device slated for the US would be coming with WM 7, she said "Let me pass you to the technicians they would have a better idea about that". I then spoke with a technician and he verified with his supervisor that the HD was slated to come over here after they finish with the Diamond and Pro devices. He said that there were no plans regarding which carrier or if it was coming unlocked only, but that it definitely was coming.

I then called the same lady back and informed her about the conflict of information and she stated that the only official statement is that there are no plans to bring the HD to US right now. I then replied that this statement leaves it up in the air, it could come here or it could not and she agreed.

So, there you have it. That was my little contribution. Decide for yourselves, until the next announcement from HTC.
