PDANet update for iPhone: Dirty Tactics?

June Fabrics' PDANet application is a useful program for any jailbroken iPhone owner who wishes to tether a computer to their iPhone to make use of their phone's data connection.

However, up until this point, PDANet has been a free program available via Cydia. The most recent 1.40 update brings better stability and bug fixes.

It also sneaks in a timer which, when expired, greets users to tell them that PDANet must be purchased for $29. While I personally find value in the PDANet application, I find that it reflects poorly on the developer to not fully disclose the full effects of making the update to their latest release. iPhone forums are abuzz with frustrated users who were caught off guard with this apparent bait and switch tactic.

Here's the full list of updates from their website:

  • Implement VPN and UDP support.
  • Display a numeric battery meter (you know you want it).
  • Resolve a CPU usage issue that drains the battery faster.
  • Add a DNS cache for instant lookup, improve initial connection speed.
  • Pause UI update when device is sleeping to save power.
  • This version is a significant improvement over previous versions.

Anyone else annoyed?

Yes I think it sucks bigtime! It should be very clear if an app is not free in Cydia. I feel quite reluctant to pay for an app that can't be guarantied it will even work on next firmware update.
