Skype for iPhone

Cnet is reporting that the Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday. This is a free application that will allow calls only if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network, so your call quality will in part be at the mercy and strength of wireless networks nearby--calls will not work over the cell phone network on the iPhone (but chatting will.)

In terms of navigation, Skype's VoIP app for iPhone looks more like your traditional iPhone app than it does Skype 4.0 for Windows. For many who already prefer Apple's sleek interface archetype, that's a triumph, but those who enjoy Skype's branding may feel disappointed.

You can read the entire story over at Cnet.

FYI:::: The Application VOIPOver3G for iPhone allows Skype to work perfectly over 3G. Although I have only done a limited test (24 minute skype call) it worked great.
True... If you are making calls all day everyday, a headset is your best route. But it is nice to have Skype work over the device hardware.

Some critics have stated you cannot use iphone Skype over 3G (YET). True, it should also work over 3G, but from past experience on my Palm Treo 750, Skype NEVER worked well over 3G ...for me

iPhone users rejoice! Skype on the iPhone is certainly the best Skype experience we have seen to date.
I never hold the phone to my head on a normal basis, as it has been well proven by peer reviewed research that the consistant exposure increases your risk of health issues from auditory nerve tumors to brain tumors.

So,needless to say, the handset speaker not working on WM devices is a non-sequiter to folks who use headsets more often than not.
Bluewater... Yes, just like on normal phone calls you can use the handset speaker and mic (Held to your head). :)

If the iPhone version can use the front side handset speaker only, just as if making a normal call on the iPhone, that's a great improvement over the WiMo version. According to Skype, Microsoft deliberately limits access to the handset speaker and it's up to the manufacturer or carrier to provide a driver to enable that access. Look's like Apple didn't have that hangup.
Bluewater, Yes, the iPhone version has speakerphone, handset speaker, and headset capabilities. So far its great except of-course you have to run Skype in order to receive calls. Im thinking Skype will have an update as soon as Push notifications are enabled, curious about implementation.

Again, Apple needs to enable native background apps!
One be flaw (by design) with the WiMo version is lack of access to the handset side speaker when making calls. Skype on most WiMo phones (E-ten being the only exception I believe) uses the speaker phone speaker unless earphones are used.

Hopefully the iPhone version doesn't suffer from this defect and will put pressure on Microsoft to in general allow VOIP applications access to the handset speaker.
Released! And works great! Skype has come a long way since it's Windows Mobile version I TRIED to use last year. Have they updated that version to actually be useful? I never had much luck with the WM version of Skype, but finally... the iPhone version works flawlessly in my limited tests (25 minute phone call overseas for FREE).

Big step forward. Now lets get audio turn-by-turn GPS navigation on there too!
Overseas in 1 week... Hope it's true!
Me too. I hope it works well
Beat me to it! Haha

Can't wait to download this one
