I decided to go ahead and give Windows 7 RC a try on my Samsung NC10 Netbook. So far I’ve only been running it for a few days, but my experience has been very positive. I was definitely amazed at how solid the beta was and the RC is just as solid and appears to be slightly more repsonsive. The details on the download pate say that the RC is good through June 1, 2010, so that gives us plenty of time to play with it.
Here are a list of steps that I followed to get Windows 7 RC running on my netbook. The installation should be pretty straight forward.
- Install Windows 7 RC
- Run Windows Update, this will update the graphics and network drivers
Now just download and install some additional software so that hotkeys, microphone, camera and touchpad work correctly.
- Easy Display Manager 2.1.10.1
- Easy Battery Manager 3 3.2.1.8
- Synaptics touchpad Vista x86 driver this is version 12.2.11.0 (the first download on the page).
- Realtek HD Sound Drivers for Vista
- Numaga camera drivers 343.2001.4001.7 for XP
- Play Camera 2.0.0.15 for XP
- Two finger scrolling tool – After installing you can right-click on the tray icon and use the Settings dialog to configure the application to start with windows.
All the additional software should install just fine with adminstartion prilivages. Of course I am running Windows 7 RC with 2GB of RAM installed in my netbook. I definitely recommend this relatively cheap upgrade for anyone that will plan on upgrading to Windows 7 in the future.
I will continute to post updates on my experiences with Windows 7 RC on my Samsung Netbook. So far I only have Visual Studio 2008 and Office 2007 installed.
