At the WWDC Keynote Apple Today announced the next generation iPhone, the iPhone 3GS. The device will look the same as the current 3G model but has increased processor speeds, higher quality camera, as well as other enhancements.

Speed

Faster than the previous generation: Launching messages is 2.1 faster, load the NY Times in Safari: 2.9 times faster.

Camera

New camera, with auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance.

Special macro and low light modes.

Can trim video with a tap of the finger, and share it with MMS, email, MobileMe and YouTube.

Connectivity

Supports the 7.2 Mbps HSDPA standard

Design

Same design as before.

Greener materials: Arsenic-free glass, BDF-free, Mercury-free LCD.

Special features

It has a compass application, which works with the included magnetometer. It's integrated into the new maps, showing orientation, alongside longitude and latitude.

Voice control. You can now talk with your iPhone, Enterprise-style. You can instruct it to play similar songs to the one you are playing, or call people.

Nike + support built in.

Supports accessibility features, like zooming on text, inverting video, and voice over when you touch whatever text is on screen.

Battery life

Increased battery life.

Graphics

Includes hardware to support the OpenGL|ES standard, for faster and more complicated 3D games.

Price and availability

$199 for 16GB version.

$299 for 32GB version.

Available on June 19th.

AT&T is a complete joke! Doesnt look like I can update until July 12/2009 (Not a big deal), but I called AT&T and asked about this, they state if I purchase or order the day of release or after I would get early upgrade/subsidized pricing. We shall see if I upgrade, but at least they state I can.
I stated that the Pre's Achilles heel is Sprint. After reading some of the policies that AT&T is applying to the iPhone 3GS (no discount for existing 3G owners, delaying features that will be available to customers immediately outside the US, etc.) it's clear that the iPhone's Achilles heel is AT&T. (Is that really a surprise?) We really need to get these devices on multiple competing networks!
Physboy, agree Palm is the biggest platform change - obviously its a new OS from the ground up. Palm Pre is a great alternative to the iPhone, but got very "laggy" once I placed a few applications in the background. I hope they can fix that soon.

Platform-wise, the biggest change for this year was Palm, then WM, and finally Apple. Not sure where BB fits since Storm 2 specs are not officially out yet.
Ummmm interstink we really didn't post this that late. Also everyone who posts here is a volunteer.
Oh, did I forget, iPhone 3G"S" just stupid name... Maybe iPhone 3G+ or something else...
Faster CPU and video capture with editing is nice, bluewater's right, Evolutionary...
After playing with a Pre for the last two days, Im sticking with the iPhone! But would still like to see background apps without having to use "Backgrounder"

BTW, why so long for this post. MobilityToday might have to change your name to MobilityTomorrow.
Evolutionary, not revolutionary. Would have liked a higher resolution screen. The "greening" of the iPhone is welcome, thought it will never be truly green until the battery is user replaceable.
Not impressed with this at all.
