Video: Sprint Hero Frustrations

Everyone knows that I recently made the switch to the Android platform, mainly because of memory leak issues with the webOS. Now after using the Sprint Hero for a couple of weeks now, I've noticed that it may have some memory management issues as well. Here is a little video that shows some issues that I have with the Sprint Hero's speed.

I'm not sure if it's the hardware of the Hero, because we all know that it's not the best hardware out there, or the fact that it's still running Android 1.5, or even maybe a combination of both? I really like a lot of things about Android, but the fact that I'm still stuck on an older version of the operating systems brings up concerns about that platform. I just feel that the line-up of Android devices is too fragmented, ie. there are devices being sold running different versions of the OS as well as different UI customizations that the OEM put on them. It sure does feel like Android is the NEW Windows Mobile.

First, I have the Hero and have very few issues. If you are using task killers, stop. Those can cause that very thing. Android is very good at controlling resources. The Hero easily beats most android phones except maybe the nexus one. Also, try using commantalb off the market. It allows you to see any applications that are fully running in the background an allows you to quit them or switch to them. I would do a factory reset, restart one to two times a day which is recommended for most dumb phones even, don't install task killers and use commantalb to close programs like browser, people, and phone after using them. Also, either hit quit to exit an app or use the back button and not home. This will keep apps from running in the background. If you still have trouble, root and run app optimizer. It does little to change the actual rom of the phone, but helps speed things up. Or you could use fresh, but that will change more on your phone. Android is extremely fast, you just have to learn to use it. Also, 2.1 will fix a lot of these issues, so just be patient.
