MS Plots iPhone Rival, Vista PR, as MobileMe Draws Flak

Apple has been boosting sales of Macs with its Mac OS X operating system -- seemingly at Microsoft's expense, as more PC users turn up their noses at Microsoft's Windows Vista. Apple also has had great success with its iPhone, but now that Apple is taking flak because of problems with its MobileMe service, an admiring Microsoft appears ready to go after some of Apple's revenue.

In a memo distributed to Microsoft employees Wednesday, CEO Steve Balmer said Apple is good at "providing an experience that is narrow but complete, while our commitment to choice often comes with some compromises to the end-to-end experience." As a result, he wrote, Microsoft will work with hardware vendors to make sure there are "absolutely no compromises."

Amid reports that Microsoft is planning a rival to the iPhone, Ballmer wrote that he wants Microsoft to emulate Apple by controlling all aspects of a product's design. Reportedly, Microsoft's iPhone challenger would be built around its struggling Zune media player using Windows Mobile 7.

In the memo, Ballmer acknowledged that changing the public's perception of Vista is a priority. He said the company will soon mount a campaign to "tell our story."

Meantime, Walt Mossberg, a well-known technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal, criticized Apple's MobileMe subscription service in a rare swipe at Apple products. Many longtime users of the renamed .Mac service are upset because they haven't been able to access their e-mail. The $99-a-year service is meant to seamlessly synchronize (or push) data between iPhones, PCs and Macs.

MobileMe, Mossberg wrote, is both sluggish and buggy with Web pages loading slowly. In his tests, syncs between the PCs and Macs he used took 15 minutes. Apple says it's working on a fix.

He also found problems synchronizing with Microsoft's Outlook e-mail application. And he said that for changes to appear in calendars, a manual refresh was necessary. Apple had promoted MobileMe for enterprises as Microsoft "Exchange for the rest of us," a slogan that it seems to have dropped.

Other reviewers have had similar complaints about MobileMe.

In response, Apple has given subscribers an extra month of service free. In the United Kingdom, users got two months after complaining that creating a trial of MobileMe resulted in credit-card "holds" of 121 pounds (US$240.43) instead of a half-pound.

Apple has declined to comment, although it acknowledges there are problems on its Web site.

Gotta tell you Phys, even my WM 6.0 TC is rock solid stable. HTC (driver excluded) got the ROM right on the first time. You would hope that Samsung did right re: the stability of the Omnia.
Yes efjay, do you find the Omnia to be reliable (resets)?
Borrowed from jkOnTheRun:

"In the competition between PCs and Macs, we outsell Apple 30-to-1. But there is no doubt that Apple is thriving. Why? Because they are good at providing an experience that is narrow but complete, while our commitment to choice often comes with some compromises to the end-to-end experience." - Steve Ballmer

Having come from the WM world to my first iPhone, that's my impression. The iPhone is not as feature rich as a WM 6 device, but it certainly been a good experience so far. The iPhone 3G does have problems, but with 2.1 in the offing, there's no doubt Apple is working hard to address them.

Ballmer's admission in part reflects how Microsoft's WM partners are working to hide WM under new user friendly interfaces. This work reduces the value of WM branding and makes it harder for Microsoft to control the future direction of the OS. This, combined with Apple's recent successes, gives support to the idea that Microsoft is considering or has in development an iPhone rival based on a future version of WM.

Personally, I'd welcome such a device. With it's sizable bankroll and name recognition, Microsoft directly entering the cell phone hardware business would bring a new level of competition that would benefit us all. The question is, could Microsoft do it right? Given Vista, the Wii knocking of the xBox as the top gaming platform, the failed Yahoo takeover, etc., I wonder...
Efjay,

How are you liking the Omnia? Which today interface have you settled on? How about overall performance?
Leaving WM unfinished and moving to a zune phone would be a mistake but I dont see anything to suggest a zune phone is anything other than wild speculation at this point. My Samsung Omnia is more than capable of taking on the role of multimedia/convergence device with a more intuitive interface.

Microsoft, fix your current version of WM before you start dreaming of zune phones!
A ZunePhone would be very interesting. Should we expect it to be the best windows mobile device ever, YEAH - since MS is creating it from the ground up? Or should we expect a "smart-phone" pushed to market to soon, that requires Antivirus, spyware removal tools, and resets daily? Most likely... I hope its touchscreen without a keyboard. (Insert Famous Keyboard Ballmer Quote Here)

Mossberg has it right... The MobileMe transition was not without its problems. I was unable to login for 24 hours (During launch), but I have had no other issues since that first day. Was able to sync multipe Macs and PCs without problems since. Others... continue to have other issues with MobileMe. I did write feedback to Apple about my initial issues and they gave me two months free added to my subscription.
