Apple's statement on unlocking your iPhone

Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (http://www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone's warranty. Via PRNewswire

All you would have to do is reset your device to factory standards, run the update and then mod the device again. That will keep it from being bricked due to modded device, and keep them from knowing whether or not the device was modded. In the case that the device gets bricked just from their ligitimate upgrade on a ligitimate phone your then covered.
I hear you there. It is not going to stop me from modding it.
OMG... you mean they can brick the iPhone!!!! Don't you think people who are smart enough to try this know this already! Is Apple really that slow? I mean come on, sure they might get a hand full of non-tech users scared with that statement but the rest, the tech savvy, will unlock their units and keep right on going!
