iPhone Dev Team Teases 3.0 yellowsn0w

The iPhone Dev Team is teasing a new software unlock for the upcoming 3.0 iPhone 3G software. According to their blog, they will be demoing the software later Tuesday evening and nerds everywhere will rejoice:

"On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd and also placed here when the feed starts. The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w. But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.

Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!)."

This is shaping up to be a fantastic week for iPhone lovers. I'm sure a lot of the Mobility Today staff (myself included) won't be upgrading until a jailbreak or unlock (or both!) is released for 3.0, so we'll be watching this one very closely.

@j2inet, that is correct... I guess what I should have said, is when the iPhone exclusivity is up, maybe we will see it on other US carries (New radio for CDMA/EVDO) and verizon would be my choice. Im over-all happy with AT&T service and there new move to offer iPhone owners a subsidized price for early upgrade is a nice move.
When I was with Sprint/Nextel and my phone broke 2 months before contract renewal, they would not budge and I cancelled my account instead of taking there "cheapo" phone for one month until I could officially upgrade to another "GOOD" device at a subsidized price. That was 10 years ago...
@interstink - unlocked or not the iPhone won't work on Verizon since they are a CDMA carrier and the iPhone has a GSM radio.
Looks like Jailbreak and Unlock will now work on all current iPhones no matter the modem base band version. Good news for those that unlock. Jailbreak seems to be second nature these days, wonder how long before 3Gs is jailbroken. Pay-as-you-go never would work for me, and Tmobile has spotty service in Chicago, so unless I can switch to Verizon, AT&T is my only choice for now. :)

One step forward, one step back. The 3Gs has got me thinking about trying the iPhone again, but only if jail-broken, unlocked and off-contract.

The above is good news. Unfortunately, word came yesterday that the 3.0 version of the OS will prohibit the use of AT&T Pay-As-You-Go plans (presumably T-Mobile ToGo will still work) with the iPhone, which has been a cheap alternative to iPhone owners that aren't heavy OTA data users. I be happy to hear from anyone with workarounds to this latest AT&T roadblock, since it will probably determine if I get a 3Gs.
I will, Bill. Oh, yes....I will be getting the 3Gs.
I wonder if it's a real permanent unlöock this time, otherwise I can now pay my operator to have it officially unlocked since it's been 12 moths shortly.
