Video: HTC Diamond problems

In this video we will go over three issues so far we have experienced after using the phone for 2 days. Some of these I note in this video are small but I certainly think HTC should have addressed them prior to launch. What are your thoughts?

The reset button isn't that hidden, although it's inside. if you take out the stylus pen you can touch it. It's made like that placed in that corner so you can press it with the stylus very quick.
The Diamonds been delayed by two weeks in the UK so they can perform a software upgrade alledgedly, mmm very interesting looks like they watch your reviews Dave
Blue,

I agree about the history regarding the video lag issue. But that issue can be triggered by simply rotating the screen from portrait to landscape and back for any of the HTC devices.

My Wing which is using the OMAP chipset lags like a camel towing a cadilac. So the history actually goes back sometime more than that. Same old same old for HTC, they just don't get the concept of having the hardware meet the needs of the software or they do and they just are trying to make an upgrade path for it as they stated with the Cruise and Tytn II issues.

One can plainly see that the TF Home screen comes up rather quickly after about 2 or 3 attempts, this is analogous to the time it is taking for the application to become fully resident in RAM so that the processing is faster.

If it was the chipset itself (regarding the 3D and 2D rendering) it would always lag, there would be no conditions outside of scaling for power management which would cause the chipset to run at different frequencies over time.

If the scaling was happening and at fault, then the standard Today screen would have suffered similar performance issues. I wonder how switching from portrait to landscape is without the cusomization as well.

Since scaling is most likely not the culpret, it stands to reason that the memory size, being the only remaining difference of effect between the standard Today screen and the TF Home screen, is the culpret. That is just a preliminary hypothesis though as I do not have a unit to test with.
shoey5 -

I only agree with you up to a point concerning the video lag issue: HTC has a history of poor video performance on phones built around the MSM7xxxx platform. Obviously, the rendering of the Touchflo interface places enough strain on the chip set to reveal this issue.

Up to now, HTC has only provided weak fixes to some of their own applications on HTC branded devices. Whether or not in the future HTC will provide a firmware update that addresses video performance, either in specific applications, or better yet, takes advantage of MSM7xxxxx video acceleration for all applications, is a big question. Unfortunately, HTC's track record isn't good.

The "fingerprint on the lens" issue looks to be form over function. The protective window on my Touch is recessed below a reflective bezel which helps protect it from accidental smudges. The HTC design team probably thought a similar feature would look out of place on the Diamond. Taking the back cover off Diamond to take pictures, or for soft resets, will get very annoying very fast.
Where do you find the registry keys?
You can disable the fast sleep function during a call by setting the next to registry keys to "0".

HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableFastDormantDisplayDuringCall

HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone\Sleep

This works on the Touch Cruise so should work on the Diamond as well I think :)
With HTC's track record their fix or update to this will be a new device. Which will make us look to our good friends at xda developers to extract the fix from the new device and cook it into a new custom rom.
JNGold, David - I agree, these problems shouldn't be in the release rom. Point I was making is while they have past devices with Touch Flo, this is a first gen device in terms of brand new chipsets/software, ie. New Touch Flo written from ground up, and new chipset so their drivers/software are going to need to mature.

Still, no excuse for not getting them taken care of before the release, unfortunately not the first company to do this, and not the last but I don't see this as deal breakers for me as they will get sorted out, through HTC updates and user tweaks.
Maybe we iPhone users are spoilt but why did the diamond not have a proximity sensor, then when its put to your ear the screen goes off, then move away from your ear it comes on, simple and effective
It almost seems that the TouchFlo is such a resource hog that it cannot stay resident for too long and virtually has to reload itself to become resident again each time you summon it from some other application. Another fine case where the hardware does not meet the software needs. Crap, crap, crap. If they do not get this issue resolved ASAP, I will not be looking to the Pro version at the end of the year. That is for sure!
Shoey great comments and we appreciate you posting them! I agree with JNGold as this phone's ROM release date is 5/25/08!!!! What were they thinking?
"The delay with Touch Flo doesn't seem to bad at least until HTC tweaks their rom."

That's the whole thing in a nutshell. HTC did have a chance to tweak their rom, that's what the first generation of TF devices was for (Cruise, Dual, Touch Enhanced). Sure, the TF code has changed but how it reacts and interacts with the hardware should have been taken care of.

As for HTC getting out updates.....I am still waiting for a Cruise "performance fix" with WM6.1.
The delay with Touch Flo doesn't seem to bad at least until HTC tweaks their rom. It is a new device and the first with this new version of Touch Flo. Bugs are expected with a new device, something I've experienced many times being an early adopter but bugs/tweaks ect will come in future updates. Just hope HTC is proactive in getting these things out with this device.

The reset button being under the battery cover, it's very surprising HTC would do that compared to all their other devices. Could be wrong, I think I read somewhere that there is another way to soft reset the device through keys, might want to look into that, if that's the case, might not be so bad as the one under the battery cover could be for those extreme lockups. I hope that's the case.

About the camera lens, looks like the triangle lifts the device from the actual camera lens, is that correct, removing the little plastic looks like it will resolve the issue if that's the case. I've had other phones where I put a little clear film right on the camera lens, protects the camera and because it's inside a bit, prevents finger prints on it.

The screen goin off, that's a biggy, very annoying. I can see what they were thinking though. I've set other WinMo devices to leave the screen off on incoming emails, calls ect to maximize battery. But the way it should work is turn it off after 3 seconds, if you turn it back on leave it on. Just a question, does the problem occur with Bluetooth off or when you pull the stylus out? I'm willing to bet there is a simple registry setting that can be altered for that timeout.
I am using Tmobile and no issues with reception.. Phys every WinMo device is prone to resets..
I haven't reset my device yet. I just wish I could have the AT&T service. I also have the iphone, which I love but the Windows Mobile platform is so much better for business for me, just wish it was as easy to use as the iphone.
How about stability Marc, how often are you resetting device?
I'm using the Diamond now and I'm not finding any lag when I turn on or off the device. I do find lag when opening programs, not sure if that's just a Windows Mobile thing or not. I'm getting some great reception with T-Mobile.
Dave, you said that the soft reset days are over with the device on the first video. If that is the case, it makes sense to hide the reset button since it will be used so infrequently.

Are you now stating that the device is just as reset prone as previous devices?
