HTC TyTN II first day...

A real fun and powerful device.

I totally apologize for not posting sooner but I have been digging around with my new HTC TyTN II. First of all I love how this unit looks overall compared to its little brother the TyTN. I think HTC has done a fantastic job fixing the horror of a Today screen Microsoft created. The unit is probably one of the fastest Windows Mobile devices I have used other than my Advantage. I haven't had a TON of time with the unit but I have noticed some things I like and dislike. Please keep posted here as I will definitely write my review on this device along with videos and pictures. Please add whatever questions you might have in the comment section.

DISLIKES

  • The unit definitely needs a bigger battery 1350mAh just doesn't cut it especially for a device with 802.11, HSDPA, GPS and Bluetooth.
  • I have no clue how to tweak the GPS as there is no application associated with it? It just works..
  • TomTom included is a complete waste for US. Why? Because you have to buy the entire US/Canada maps on DVD not like European maps where you can buy cities.
  • Bluetooth pairing w/my Speakerphone worked fine but it looks like the Bluetooth Stack on the TyTN II is weird. Volume is much lower compared to the Q9m and Treo 750.
  • US Tech support is terrible for this unit. As per HTC America's "We will not support the TyTN II, thank you sir have a nice day!"
  • I need Microsoft Voice Command... CASE CLOSED! Poor decision HTC!!!!

LIKES

  • I LOVE the tilt screen. Most comfortable keyboard I have ever used.
  • Skype is fantastic on the TyTN II! Wish I could get video to work on Skype but they haven't enabled it yet..
  • Memory, Memory, Space.. Gotta love it!
  • 3MP camera takes some great pictures!
  • TomTom teaser makes me want to spend more money for maps.. Perfect fit for me in NY when walking around Manhattan.
  • GPS works with zero configuration
  • Google Maps and Live Search for Mobile works perfectly with the embedded GPS.
  • Nice touch by adding a screen protector in the box
  • USB charging.. Gotta love it!
  • Slingbox works perfectly.. No stuttering and full screen viewing is beautiful on the tilt

"Phys so far I can say usage of the phone will drain the battery. I made two calls yesterday and surfed/slinged a BUNCH and was down to 41%.. "

Could that also be following the same pattern as the 8525? When I first got my 8525 the battery life was mediocre @ best but after 30 plus charge cycles I can really notice the difference. The battery lasts much longer.
Here is the website for the keyboard sliding problem(among other neat things) with pics as requested by David C. :)

I can definitely say that I have had the MDA for almost 2 years now, and the Wing since May of this year. However, I have not experienced any problems with the slider on either devices.

So...how many times a day to you find that the device runs down to about 20-25%?
I have no problems with the sliding keyboard.
Dave, can you elaborate on what sliding keyboard issue you are experiencing with the Tytn II that folks appear to be talking about in here?
I think the point is, after spending 800 bucks, you shouldn't have to take apart anything. I am surprised that HTC couldn't nail this down after the two previous attempts (Kjam and TyTn).
It would be great if you had some visuals to show :)
You know guys/girls there is a "fix" for the sliding out keyboard problem. However you need to have some knowledge and/or experience in taking apart phones in order to do this modification/fix to the keyboard from staying closed. After done correctly, it STAYS closed unless you intentionally open it.
I like the HTC Plugin.. I am trying to get the cube installed.. Ill keep you all posted.
Puff, puff, give, man ...
Dave, tell us more about the new HTCplug, what's different from the Touch's?
The VC is useless for non-english users. Maybe that's why it was removed.
Sounds like a pretty good device. Granted it's not an iPhone, only kidding.
Phys yeah thry threw the garbage version that you need to train.

I have installed so far

Pocket Express
Sling
Live
Google Maps
Tom Tom

more to come

Also only one reset so far.
Almost forgot, what apps have you installed and how is stability (necessary restarts/day).
Dave, for real?? They did not include MS VC?? What did they do put their garbage version in again? Also, regarding the battery, how many times a day do you feel that you need to plug the device in due to running down to 15% or less?
Yeah mine did it from day one and drove me mad
Chrissy,

I would tend to think that the TyTn II probably has a very nice a snug fit.

However, so did my KJAM for about 6 months. After that, I started experiencing the "side slide" ;) It is of my humble opinion that the quality remains to be seen only after sliding the kb in and out over time.
Dave one thing that bugged me on the Tytn was the slide out keyboard. Not so much using it but the device coming apart slightly in my pocket, i always seemed to be clicking it back together, don't know if i had a bad device is the new one a solid fit
Hi, how about picture quality? I tested the 8525 against the iPhone and photos came out a lot sharper on the iPhone, colors were richer and more vibrant. Curious as to TyTN II image quality. For example a red flower on the iPhone was red but the 8525 was a rusty orange. Thanks.
Also to note.. Youtube works perfectly on the TyTN II..

Click the IE button, type http://m.youtube.com

The HTC Streaming will pick up the video and played nicely.
