Apple Sells One Million iPhone 3Gs in First Weekend

CUPERTINO, California - July 14, 2008 - Apple today announced it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on Friday, July 11. iPhone 3G is now available in 21 countries Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US and will go on sale in France on July 17.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone plus 3G networking that is twice as fast*, built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs over 800 third party applications available through the new App Store. In the US, the new iPhone 3G is priced at just $199 for the 8GB model, and $299 for the 16GB model**.

I had a firewire iPod charging cable that had an adapter for the 12 volt connector on a car. When connected to my brothers iPod mini and a computer a message would show up on the screen stating that firewire connections were not supported. I gave it to some one with an iPhone and it would not work in a car for them. We didn't think much of it, just figured that since it was older it was broken, so it was just thrown away.
I did notice a charging method I used for the iPod Touch doesnt work for the iPhone 3G. I was able to charge using an OLD 1st Gen. iPod Power Block to a Firewire to dock connector cable. iPhone doesnt like this method, but the little power adapter is nice - would rather the Doc.
That blows. I wonder if the Lexus integration kit would have the same issue? In my other car, I have a belkin charger/aux input.

Like I said before, bad move Apple.
Thanks for clearing that one up Steve. I guess that is just the compromise ya get when dealing with proprietary connectors. I think there would be similar issues with other devices that have proprietary connectors as well.

I wonder how many iPhones were purchased for demoing, testing and destroying.... :)
Chris was talking about an in car kit that he has for his BMW. The cable will connect and llow him to play music but it will not charge the unit.

There are some accessoires that will have this issue. I have and Altec-Lansing sound dock that does the same thing.
Interstink,

Glad to hear you have "seen the light". It is a breath of fresh air, isn't it? Even though I am not pulling the trigger just yet (as I am really happy with my TC), I can understand how you feel. If the ip3g was available back in Jan before I chose the Cruise, I would have certainly gone with it instead. For now, I'll enjoy my Cruise and play around with my update iPod Touch. :)
Old power adapters and video cables work just fine with new iPhone 3G.

Just ditched my Treo 750 for the iPhone 3G. I do miss one thing, PHONEALARM!!! No repeating or custom Alarms on the iPhone YET... im sure it wont be long. might have to wait for a Jailbreak once again to use Caterpiller/Kate, but it's no PhoneAlarm.

After years of fighting with Windows Mobile & PocketPC's, this iPhone is a pleasure to use. It's the best Mobile Phone I have ever used/owned (Ive used/owned almost all the WM and PPC devices in each "weight class"). Im not surprised as I've played with the 1st Gen. iPhone plenty of times, but nothing compares to owning.

FINALLY... Goodbye Windows Mobile, Goodbye my once loved Treo 750 and my Blackberry, Goodbye slow response, locking up, weekly if not daily resets... Ahhhh, like a cold shower on a sultry day.

David, you know what Im talkin-bout.

So what's Chris talking about?
Whew! That was a close one. ;p
Mine works fine.
Uh oh, the iPig strikes again. lol Say it isn't so...
WTF? I just heard Chris on the T4 show say that older iPhone chargers don't work on the ip3g? Considering I have two car integration kits (one in each car), I think I am glad I didn't spend the money on it for either myself and my wife. The wife is actually using my old Treo 750 and she really likes it. :)

Dumb move Apple.
