The Palm Treo 700W

Innovative, Powerful, and absolutely SLICK!

For me, this device has some of the most innovative changes that we have seen on a mobile device in years. This device is a slam dunk for Palm! I thought I would pass on to you some screen shots from a powerpoint presentation that was my first introduction to this incredible new addition in Palm's lineup.

As you know, Palm has given us a device for review purposes and it is our hope that that a review will be before your eyes shortly. It is our belief that because this device is so cool and packed with some terrific innovations as well as a unique blending of Windows Mobile and Palm features, in our opinion, rushing a review would do a great injustice to the device and you.

I can tell you that from the time Dave has had this device in his hands, he has given it quite a workout. IMPRESSIVE is the best description I can use to begin my initial thoughts. It is powerful, fast, easy to use and without question the easiest user experience I have ever experienced.

Sounds like I have the device, doesn't it? Well, I don't! Not Yet...but I will! It has been hard to get Dave to share it with me....but for the short time that I have used it, it is very cool.

What was my first impression?

SPEED!!

As we left our briefing with Palm, Dave set up his device with Exchange Active Sync as we were walking down the corridor towards the elevator. By the time we entered the elevator, he was setup and ready to do his sync. As we stepped off the elevator, his entire e-mail (137), Contacts (in excess of 500) and over 3000 calendar items were brought over and ready for use. This Verizon service is FAST, INCREDIBLLY FAST!

What was the next impression?

Truly one handed and a unique Today screen that will make your user experience the BEST you have ever experienced.

Well, more to come and it will be soon but we are not going to rush. Dave's review will give you all that you want to know but in the meantime, here are 13 shots for you to look at just to give you a "taste" of what this device is all about.

Maybe you can do me a favor...send Dave a note and tell him to share this device a little more with me...lol.

Verizon has stated that the Treo 700 does not have the ability to become a 'wireless modem' for a laptop. I use my other Pocket PC based units to do this now. Has anyone tried any solutions (like taking wireless modem from the PPC platform) and trying to get it to work yet?

As soon as I can re-acquire a copy of wireless modem, I'm going to try it out....

After buying it Fri night and getting up and running this morning, Imust say that I am (so far) VERY impressed. As previously stated in the article, it is very fast. I was surprised to to find out that the processor can push video effectively and runs very smoothly with daily use, as well. MP3s play nicely with adaptor for my headphone.

Several things I was upset about were:
1. Limited bluetooth headset compatiblity (I just bought a Jabra 500 2 months ago)
2. Taking the back case off to reset is kind of a pain.
I still need to see if some of my software will run on it, if not, I still have a Dell X50v. This is still early I know, but as a long-time Pocket PC user, I like the marriage so far.

You should have no issues with pocketinformant at all.. Bluetooth works like a charm also...
BLUETOOTH:

Does anyone know if the bluetooth functionality is better than the shortcomings of the of the bluetooth on the XV6600? As you know, with the XV6600, the bluetooth connection drops when the phone goes into sleep mode...so when the phone rings it takes 4 or 5 rings before the bluetooth connection re-establishes itself...you've missed the call by then! So...does the new Treo maintain the bluetooth connection even when in sleep mode? If so, I will immediately replace my XV6600 with this!
Nice... but the presentation touts the benefits of Microsoft Windows Mobile 5, and the speed of connectivity on the Verizon. What does Palm offer? A CDMA device (no GSM... international use?), at first sight nothing more exciting than a HP iPAQ hw6500, and excluding built-in GPS.
Has anyone tried to use Pocket Informant or some of the other popular add-on software with the Treo 700?
