Use your Motorola Q as a broadband modem

Surf at broadband speeds as you tether your Q.

A member over at Qusers named baaadandy figured out how to use your Motorola Q as a broadband modem! Now before everyone jumps at me a little disclaimer, "If you should decide on using this workaround you are breaking your terms and conditions of your contract with Verizon Wireless and could be dropped". Ok now thats out of the way here is how it is done..

To setup the Q:

  1. Dial ##342587
  2. Enable Dial-Up Networking
  3. Go to Start, Accessories, Modem Link
  4. Make sure that "USB" is selected under "Connection"
  5. Select "Activate"
  6. Download the driver Here.
  7. Plug in the Q.
  8. When the New Hardware Dialogue appears, select "Install from a specific location" and point to the folder you have stored the driver.
  9. Clicking "Next" a few times will complete the installation.

To prevent the phone from locking up, you have to do these steps in this order.

  1. When you go into the "Modem Link" program, you will select Activate and then Done. The Q will return to the home screen.
  2. Plug in your USB cable.
  3. Tether.
  4. When done, disconnect the DUN connection on the computer side and wait for it to be clearly gone.
  5. Reopen the Modem Link program and select "Deactivate".
  6. The hourglass thingy will appear. Once the status reads "Inactive" select done.
  7. The Modem Link program will exit and now the Q will function in Activesync mode again as normal.
  8. Enjoy

Dave, I may be the world's biggest dummy but my Q won't accept the number gived. I dial ##342587 and I get the recorded msg from verizon, "your call cannot be completed". Am I doing something wrong?
Hi i want to connect my pc to the internet with my sprint motorola q .
Dial ##342587

that above does not work for a sprint motorola q

can anyone help with that?
Dial ##342587
why is that on mine...the driver comes out as Smartphone instead of Motorola Q Driver? Most of the settings for the drivers that are given here for a verizon Q but what about for Sprint?
your driver site requires a username and password. what is it
Is there a place where the "modem link" utility can be added to the Q? It has been removed from my operating system
I followed the instructions. My phone locked up. I removed teh battery and restarted my phone.

When I restarted the "modem link" program was gone. Anyone else have this problem? Where can I download this utility/program or kupdate my entire "Window Mobile" software?
A couple of additional items might help some of you that are still having trouble getting a connection (like I did):

1.) While your Q is connected to your PC, try turning flight mode on and then off again. (You can toggle flight mode by holding down the "home" key and then selecting flight mode.) Not sure why this helped, but after doing this I was able to connect.

2.) If you are on Verizon Wireless, you may need to enter a username which should be: your_mobile_number@vzw3g.com

Good luck!
After you have installed the modem driver -
10. open intenet explorer and select tools/internet options.
11. click the connections tab
12.Under Dial-up and VPN settings click "add"
13.Select Dial-up to private network click next
14.Select only the motorola q usb modem, click next.
15.Verizon users enter #777 for the phone number(other carriers use your internet access code)click next.
16. enter Q usb modem for the name and click finish.
17. Verizon users enter "vzw" in the password field, leave the user name and domain blank. Click OK.
18. select Dial whenever a network connection is not present then click ok.

If your phone is activated as in steps 3-5 above, your internet connection should work!

I tried last night too and I was able to enable the DUN on my phone. However, I couldn't get any connection on my PC. Do I need to dial anything from the Dial-Up? I have unlimited data plan with Verizon. I think most people here are having the same problem. Is there anyone can give us some advices? Please......
i followed all the steps, but the Q only shows up under internet connections when modem link is deactivated.

any thoughts?
I tried last night without success, Do i need to configure my LAN setting to use the USB as my connection. I got the driver to download and be recognized and I was able to activate USB. I got no indication of a network connection on my laptop. Any advice?
Okay, I have the phone acting as a modem.. On the windows side I have created a dial-up networking connection using the the new modem. However it hangs on dialing. I have tried the ## number in the instructions.. blank, etc.. What is the magic thing you do on the windows side?
Never mind.. RTFM.. follow the instructions and it will magically appear.
I just bought the Motorola Q and Verizon has removed the modem link program from accessories. Is there a place where I can add this program?
This is only for USB Connections
i may have to try that just to see if i can get it to work!
Dave I’m confused about this being a USB connection or Bluetooth DUN
