Velocity Mobile announces new WinMo 6.1 devices

A British smartphone maker is aiming to make a name for itself with the launch today of two 3.5G Windows Mobile 6.0-based handsets, the Velocity Mobile 103 and Velocity 111.

Maker Velocity Mobile says its handsets “offer a new vision of consumer mobility through simple functionality, leading-edge features and intuitive design”.

“People want more from their mobile phones, but they still point to price, design and performance as their top priorities when they walk into the store,” said David Hayes, president and managing director of Velocity Mobile. “Velocity Mobile was created with the goal to finally eliminate […] tradeoffs and bring leading-edge smartphones to the mass consumer market.”

Both Velocity handsets offer quad-band GSM mobile phone coverage, GPS navigation and high-resolution touchscreens along with 3.5G HSDPA/UMTS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.

They run on the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional smartphone platform, so have solid corporate credentials, but also boast 2Mp camera and a 0.3Mp video camera feature for video blogging as well as video-conferencing. A microSD card expansion slot means owners can enjoy music and photos on their Velocity phone, while the TV/out port offers a further entertainment option.

Velocity Mobile designed its Windows Mobile 6.0-based handsets in conjunction with notebook ODM maker Inventec. Qualcomm chips provide the Wi-Fi radio connectivity.

Pricing hasn’t been announced but we understand from the following comment by Alex Katouzian, VP of product management at Qualcomm CDMA, that it will be fairly aggressive.

“Demand for full-featured, low-cost devices such as those Velocity Mobile is bringing to market are testimonial to the fact that wireless consumers are expecting more from their devices. By using Qualcomm chipsets, Velocity smartphones deliver worldwide 3G connectivity, integrated GPS and a fantastic multimedia experience at prices that appeal to mainstream consumers.”

Velocity Mobile unveiled its two smartphones at the CTIA Wireless 2008 mobile event in Las Vegas and says it will start shipping the Velocity 103 from Q2 and the Velocity 111 from Q3. Both will be available unlocked and operator-independent.

This quote came from someone on HoFo is very "in the know" in the industry.

"Not enough has been written about the software/UI enhancements Velocity is making for their devices. Let me put it this way: just about EVERY Velocity Mobile employee owns an iPhone (in addition to loads of other devices) and they have a Vice President of User Experience. You can expect the UI to rock."

Very cool. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Funny, both images seem to be of the 103, the 111 has a QWERTY keyboard on the face like the Moto Q and BB, but that is not shown here.

It looks like the 103 is coming with a BB'esque track ball. I believe that is a first for WinMo devices. Anyone able to verify that?

Their may be HW button options for the carriers if they go with Inventec themselves. That would explain the extra space, as this would allow an easy adaptation from a mfring perspective to add those buttons per carrier request from Inventec.

Either way it is great to see HTC getting some well deserved competition.
One thing I noticed on the 103 is there is alot of "dead" space from the end of the screen to the phone buttons. Another set of user mappable buttons could have been placed in that space.

I noticed that because my TC has 4 button on the front face. The phone start and end buttons which can be customized by using Long-press. The other two buttons (messaging and pie) I have remapped for task close and task menu. As much as I like the 2.8" screen for touch tasks, I also like to use the hardware keys for common functions.
Ok, so where can I get my hands on one?
Looks like I'll need to get my Socket Mobile Power Pack charged up for the 103! Is that the 1700 band I see (T-Mo?). Sure hope they don't have any video issues and I hope it's not loaded with bloatware, but we know how to deal with that, huh?
Front facing keyboard would have been nice.
Leaving my TyTN, I'm not sure I can deal with no keyboard.
Looks like they are doing their own version of the HTC Home screen plugin.
Two very attractive WM devices. As mentioned above, I understand that the pricing on these units will be lower than what tech-geeks have been paying for power devices. I wonder if like the US Touch Dual, these devices will be sold in Best Buy or Circuit City as the press release mentions above.

It will be interesting what customizations to the OS will be made by Velocity to make them more appealing to the consumer.
Bigtime!!! This device gets me excited to take a sneak peak!
I like the look of it, and the TV/ VGA out sounds good to.
I want to see what Jerry thinks! He usually is a good barometer for me.
Nice to see new players.
Now this is exciting!
