E-Scooter Safety Gear That Actually Matters (and What to Skip)

Picture the crash. Most people imagine getting hit by a car, because that's the scary one, and it's why they buy a helmet and stop there.
How you'll actually fall
The crash you're statistically more likely to have doesn't involve another vehicle at all. Your front wheel drops into a pothole, catches a tram track, or hits a lip of raised concrete you didn't see because the sun was low. The scooter stops. You don't. Because you're standing upright on a small platform with your hands out front, you go forward and down, and you land on your palms, your forearms, and then your face or the side of your head.
That's the geometry that should drive your shopping list.
It's also why the two cheapest items on that list — a helmet that fits and a pair of gloves — cover the two body regions that get hurt most. Everything after those is refinement.
Helmets, and the fit problem
Spend on this one. Not necessarily a lot, but don't treat it as the item you optimize for price.
Here's the thing that undermines most helmet purchases though: fit beats price, and by a wide margin. A well-fitting mid-priced helmet outperforms an expensive one sitting at the wrong angle, because a helmet that shifts on impact is protecting whatever it slid over to. The expensive parts of a helmet buy you ventilation, weight, finish, and rotational-impact technology. None of that helps if the shell moves.
Fitting it properly takes four minutes
- Level, not tipped back. The front rim should sit roughly two finger-widths above your eyebrows. The tipped-back look leaves your forehead completely exposed, and the forehead is what arrives first when you go over the bars.
- Snug with the straps undone. Shake your head hard. If the helmet moves independently of your scalp, it's too big or needs a different pad thickness.
- Side straps forming a V under and slightly forward of your ears, with the junction sitting below the earlobe.
- Chin strap tight enough that opening your mouth wide pulls the helmet down. Loose enough to swallow comfortably. That's the window.
- Try it on with whatever you actually wear — a beanie in winter, sunglasses, a hood. Fit changes.
The angle problem nobody mentions
Road cycling helmets are shaped around a cyclist's head position: leaning forward, chin down, looking up the road. You ride a scooter bolt upright. Put a road helmet on an upright head and the same shell that gave a cyclist good frontal coverage now sits high on your forehead, with the extended rear tail pointing at the sky instead of shielding the back of your skull.
A skate-style helmet — the rounded, low-profile shape with more coverage around the back and sides — often suits scooter riding better for exactly this reason. It's hotter and less vented. That's the trade.
When a bike helmet stops being enough
Bicycle helmet standards are written around bicycle-crash energies. If your scooter does speeds closer to a moped than a bike, you've moved beyond what that certification was designed for, and a helmet with more coverage — a speed-pedelec-rated lid, or a proper motorcycle helmet with a chin bar — is the honest choice. Your face is fully exposed in a half-shell. At low urban speeds most riders accept that. At 30 mph it's a different calculation, and dental work is expensive.
Retire it after one hit
Most bicycle-type helmets are single-impact designs: the liner crushes to absorb energy and doesn't recover, even when the outside looks fine. Drop it hard onto concrete or take a spill in it and replace it. Skate-style helmets built to a multi-impact standard tolerate more minor knocks, but the same rule applies to any real crash. Also replace a helmet that's been baking on a parcel shelf all summer or is more than several years old, since liner foam and straps degrade with heat and UV.
Decoding the sticker inside
There's no dedicated e-scooter helmet standard in most markets, which is why the labels you'll encounter all come from adjacent categories. Knowing which is which stops you from paying for the wrong kind of protection.

That last row catches people out. Rotational-management systems are add-on technologies inside a helmet that already meets a standard — they're not certifications and they don't upgrade a helmet's impact category. A MIPS-equipped bicycle helmet is still a bicycle helmet.
Gloves. Just buy gloves.
Gloves are the most under-bought item in scooter riding relative to how often they'd have helped, and it isn't close.
Think about the landing again. Your palms hit first, at speed, on asphalt. Bare skin against pavement is an abrasion injury on a part of your body you use for absolutely everything, and it's slow to heal because you keep reopening it. A pair of gloves with a reinforced palm turns that into a scuffed glove.
They do a second, quieter job too. Grip. Cold hands in winter and wet grips in the rain both reduce how well you can operate a brake lever, and brake lever operation is your primary safety system. Gloves keep your hands warm enough to feel the lever and dry enough to hold it.
What to look for: a palm that's actually reinforced with synthetic leather or padding rather than printed silicone dots, coverage over the base of the thumb where it drags, and enough finger dexterity to work the brake lever and your phone. Full-finger for winter, short-finger in summer if you must, but the palm is the point. Skate and BMX gloves work well and cost little. Motorcycle gloves are more protective and clumsier on scooter controls.
Wrists, elbows, knees
Buy skate gear for these, not cycling gear. Skateboarders fall the same way you will — forward, onto hands and knees, from a standing position — and their protective equipment evolved around exactly that.
Wrists first. A wrist guard with a rigid splint on the palm side spreads the impact and limits how far the joint can hyperextend, which is the mechanism behind most wrist fractures in falls like these. Some gloves integrate a splint, which is the tidiest solution because it's one item you'll actually wear. Standalone guards are cheap and go over or under gloves depending on the design.
Elbows next. Elbow pads are unglamorous and effective. Elbow abrasion is common, elbow bursitis from a hard knock is miserable, and the pads disappear under a jacket sleeve so nobody sees them.
Knees last, for street commuting. This is where I'll disagree with the standard checklist. In an upright forward fall you land hands, forearms, then chest or knees — and by that point a lot of energy is gone. Knee pads are worth having, but if the budget is finite they rank below wrists and elbows for road commuting. Reverse that order if you're riding sportily or learning on rough ground.
Shoes get skipped entirely in most guides. Wear laced, closed-toe shoes with a flat sole. You put a foot down at low speed constantly, the deck edge and the rear wheel are right there, and sandals on a scooter are how people lose toenails.
Being seen beats being padded
Here's the reframe that matters more than any single product: armour reduces the damage from a crash, but conspicuity reduces the number of crashes. Only one of those keeps your week intact.
Scooters are visually difficult for drivers. You're narrow, you have a small light signature, and you approach faster than a pedestrian while occupying roughly a pedestrian's footprint — so drivers routinely misjudge your closing speed. Many stock scooter lights are essentially a position marker: enough for someone already looking at you to confirm you exist, nowhere near enough to catch attention.
So fit real lights and run them in daylight too.
- Front: a white light bright enough to illuminate the pavement, aimed down at the surface where the potholes are. You need to see the road as much as you need to be seen.
- Rear: a red light. A steady plus a flashing unit is the usual compromise — flashing grabs attention, steady lets drivers judge distance.
- Side: wheel or deck lighting, or reflective sidewall tape. Side visibility at intersections is where you're most invisible and least protected.
- On your body: put reflective material on moving parts. Ankles and wrists read as human motion from a distance in a way a static vest doesn't.
Retroreflective material only returns light that's aimed at it, so it does nothing against a driver with dim headlights, nothing in the dusk period when headlights are off and visibility is already poor, and nothing from an angle no light is coming from. That's why lights come first and reflective fabric second.
What I'd skip
Some honest subtraction, because a shopping list that only grows isn't advice.
Skip full motocross-style body armour for a 15 mph urban commute. You won't wear it in July, and gear you don't wear protects nothing.
Skip a smart helmet that compromises fit. Integrated speakers, indicators, and cameras are fine features on a helmet that fits properly. They're a bad trade on one that doesn't, and some designs add weight exactly where you don't want it.
Skip the cheap unbranded pad set with thin foam, no certification marking, and elastic that gives up in a month. Pads that shift out of position on impact are decoration.
Skip the hi-vis vest as your visibility plan. Wear one if you like — it helps in daylight — but it isn't a substitute for lights and it shouldn't be bought instead of them.
Be sceptical of airbag vests for scooter commuting right now. They're developed mainly around motorcycle and cycling crash signatures, they're expensive, and the trigger logic isn't necessarily tuned for how a scooter goes down. Interesting technology, not the third thing you should buy.
Build order on a budget
If you're buying gradually, this is the order I'd go in. The first three cover most of the realistic risk.

Questions people actually ask
Can I use my old bike helmet?
Yes, if it fits properly, has never taken a real impact, and isn't ancient. Check the angle it sits at when you're standing upright rather than leaning forward — that's the adjustment scooter riders most often need to make.
Is a full-face helmet overkill?
At 15 mph in a bike lane, yes for most riders. On a scooter capable of 30 mph or more in traffic, no — that's the speed range motorcycle helmets exist for, and your face is what leads in a forward fall. Match the helmet to the speed you actually ride, not the speed you tell yourself you ride.
Do I need eye protection?
It scales with speed. Below about 15 mph you'll mostly be fine. Faster, and airflow dries your eyes, grit gets in, and one insect at the wrong moment closes both eyes involuntarily while you're moving. Any clear lens works; cheap safety glasses are fine.
What about riding in the rain?
Gear-wise: a jacket that doesn't flap, gloves you can still brake in, and eyewear you can see through. Riding-wise, the gear matters less than adjusting the ride — painted lines, metal covers, and tram tracks become genuinely slippery, and your braking distance grows well before you feel it change.
My city requires a helmet only under a certain age. Does that mean it's fine without one?
A legal minimum is a legal minimum, not a risk assessment. Helmet requirements vary by jurisdiction and by scooter class, and they change — check your local rules with the current official source. Then decide separately what you want on your head, because those are two different questions.
