Two people in my building bought vehicles for nearly the same trip, about a mile and a half each way. One got a folding e-scooter. The other got a genuinely nice mid-drive e-bike. Six months on, the scooter goes out every weekday and the e-bike has been sitting in a storage cage with a flat rear tire since spring.

That outcome had almost nothing to do with which machine is better. The scooter folds and stands in a coat closet six feet from a desk. The e-bike had to go down half a flight, through a shared hallway, out to a rack, and get locked with a chain that weighs four pounds. Call it forty seconds of friction at each end of each trip. Forty seconds is enough to kill a habit.

So park the wattage debate for a minute.

Start with where the thing sleeps

A short commute is short enough that the ride itself is rarely the problem. The problem is the ten feet before and after it. Ask yourself three specific questions about your day, and answer them honestly rather than optimistically:

  • Can it come inside at the destination end, or does it live outside for eight hours?
  • Are there stairs, and how many?
  • Is there a secure indoor spot at home, or is it going in a hallway, a shared garage, or a bike room you don't control?

If the answer at either end is that it stays outside, you've just made theft the dominant design constraint, and a scooter's biggest advantage evaporates. A scooter locked at a rack is not obviously safer than a bike, and it's easier to pick up and carry away. If the answer is that it comes inside with you, the scooter wins by a wide margin, because a folded scooter is luggage and a bike is furniture.

Weight matters here more than the spec sheet suggests. A commuter e-bike often lands somewhere in the 45 to 65 pound range, and folding e-bikes tend toward the heavy end of that because hinges are heavy. Commuter e-scooters are more often in the high 20s to mid 40s. Both are unpleasant on stairs. The difference is that a folded scooter can be carried in one hand at your side, and a bike cannot.

Try this before you spend anything: pick up a 40 pound object, hold it in one hand, and walk the exact route from your front door to wherever you'd store the thing. Then do it again. That's your commute, minus the fun part.

Two miles and four miles are different problems

Under about two miles, the two options basically converge. You'll arrive within a minute or two of each other, neither will use much battery, and comfort differences barely register.

Past three or four miles, the bike pulls ahead and keeps pulling. You're seated, so your legs aren't holding you up. You can pedal when you feel like it, which turns a dead battery into an inconvenience instead of a walk. Larger wheels roll over surface junk rather than into it, and bikes hold speed better on rough ground, so the gap widens as the route gets longer or worse.

There's a psychological piece too. Standing is fine for ten minutes and gets old at twenty-five, especially with anything on your back. Somewhere in that range most people quietly decide the scooter is a short-hop vehicle only.

Small wheels meet bad pavement

This is the factor people underestimate, and it's why plenty of scooters get listed for sale after one winter.

Scooter wheels are usually 8 to 11 inches. Bike wheels are 26 to 29, or 20 on a folder. A wheel drops into any gap it can't roll across, and a small wheel has far more gaps available to it. Expansion joints, sunken utility covers, brick, streetcar rails, root heave under a sidewalk, the seam where an old patch meets the road: all of it reads differently at nine inches than at twenty-seven.

Two consequences that matter when you shop.

  1. Tire type matters more on a scooter than on a bike. Air tires are the difference between a tolerable ride and a bad one. Solid and honeycomb tires never flat, and they send everything straight up the stem into your wrists and shoulders. On fresh asphalt they're fine. On anything older they're a downgrade you'll feel in your hands within a week.
  2. Suspension on a cheap scooter is mostly theater. Short-travel spring units on a budget front fork do less for you than a properly inflated 9.5 inch pneumatic tire. Forced to choose, choose air.

If your route includes a stretch of genuinely broken pavement, ride a scooter over it before you commit to one. Ten minutes of that tells you more than any review.

Which one feels safer in traffic?

Different risks, not more or less of the same risk.

A bike sits you higher, which drivers notice, and gives you the option of pedaling hard out of a bad spot. It also puts you in a category drivers already recognize, and in most places it has clearer legal footing in bike lanes. Bikes brake better as a class, because there's more rubber on the road and more room for real brake hardware.

A scooter is narrower, easier to thread past obstacles, and easier to step off at low speed. Standing gives you good forward visibility and a fast bail-out. It's worse at everything involving surface hazards, and it puts your weight high over a short wheelbase, which makes hard front braking feel sketchy in a way that bike riders never really experience.

One point that isn't a matter of taste: on both machines most of your stopping power lives at the front, and both are transformed by brakes you can modulate with one finger. On a scooter, a rear friction brake you press with your heel is not a brake. Treat it as a parking device.

What it costs to run

Electricity is the cheap part, and it's the one figure you can calculate exactly instead of guessing at. Take the battery's watt-hours, divide by 1,000 for kilowatt-hours, multiply by your rate. Charging isn't perfectly efficient, so add roughly 10 to 15 percent on top.

Find your own rate on your bill. Below is the arithmetic at three common ones.

Pennies either way. Stop optimizing this.

Your real running costs are tires, brake pads, and eventually a battery. Scooter tires wear quickly because they're small and the rear one is doing the driving. E-bike drivetrains want chain care and the occasional cassette. Batteries are the big-ticket item on both, and a replacement pack tends to cost a meaningful fraction of the whole vehicle, which is an excellent reason to buy from a maker who still sells parts for three-year-old models.

The mistake almost everybody makes

People shop on top speed and claimed range, then abandon the vehicle over something neither number describes.

Top speed is close to irrelevant on a short urban trip. You spend most of it below the limit anyway, or stopped at a light, or slowing for a pedestrian and a turning car. The difference between a 15 mph machine and a 22 mph machine across 1.8 miles is under two minutes in theory, and you'll hand most of that back at the first red.

Claimed range is worse than irrelevant. It's actively misleading. Those figures come from gentle conditions: a light rider, low constant speed, flat ground, warm weather, lowest assist setting. Cold weather alone takes a real bite out of usable capacity, and a heavier rider on hills will land well below the printed number. For a round trip under five miles, almost any modern pack does the job, so range shouldn't be driving your decision at all.

What should drive it: how many seconds of hassle sit between your front door and your first pedal stroke, whether your route surface is smooth or hostile, and whether you can stop confidently in the rain.

A decision rule you can use today

Pick the scooter if the trip is under about three miles each way, it comes indoors at both ends, and the pavement is decent. Pick the bike if any one of those three fails, if you carry cargo, or if you'd like the option of using the thing on a Saturday for something longer.

Genuinely on the fence? The tiebreaker is stairs. Count them, then go carry something heavy up them and see how you feel about doing that twice a day in February.
