Ask riders when they've come closest to going down in the wet and most of them describe the same thing: not a storm, but a drizzle. Twenty minutes of light rain onto a road that hadn't seen water in two weeks. That's the setup that puts people on the ground.
Heavy rain washes the road. Light rain lifts two weeks of oil, brake dust, diesel film and rubber residue off the surface and floats it in a thin, slick emulsion. Nobody rides cautiously in a drizzle, which is the whole problem.
The first ten minutes are the worst part
If rain starts mid-ride, treat the opening stretch as the highest-risk part of the trip: ease off the assist level, sit up, widen your following distance, stop leaning the bike in corners. Once the road has been properly rained on, grip improves noticeably.
Same logic at the other end. A road drying in patches is deceptive — good grip, good grip, good grip, then a shaded strip under a bridge that's still greasy. Uniform conditions are safer than mixed ones even when the uniform condition is worse.
Brakes: change the timing, not the force
The instinct is to squeeze harder in the rain. Wrong direction. What you need is to start earlier and squeeze more progressively, because the limiting factor isn't your brake's power — hydraulic discs have plenty — it's the tire's ability to transmit that force to a wet road before it locks.
Three specific adjustments that matter more than anything else:
- Shift your braking bias rearward slightly. Not entirely — front brakes still do most of the work — but a locked front wheel in the wet is unrecoverable in a way a locked rear isn't.
- Drag the brakes lightly for a second before you need them. This wipes the water film off the rotor and pads. On rim brakes it's not optional; it's the difference between braking and coasting.
- Brake before the corner, not in it. Grip is a fixed budget shared between turning and stopping. In the wet the budget is smaller, so spend it on one thing at a time.
If your e-bike has regenerative braking, understand which wheel it acts on. Regen usually works through the motor, so on a hub-drive bike it applies braking force at that wheel only. Strong regen on a wet, unloaded front hub is a good way to find out how little grip you had.
Pedal-assist behaves differently too
Cadence sensors don't care about wet roads. If you're in a high assist level and you start pedalling out of a slow turn, the motor delivers a torque step at exactly the moment the rear tire has least traction. Drop an assist level or two before you set off in rain and you remove a whole category of surprise.
Where you'll actually lose the front wheel
Wet asphalt is fine. It's everything embedded in the asphalt that isn't.

Notice the pattern. Every high-risk item is something that isn't asphalt. Wet-weather riding is largely a game of route-reading rather than technique.
Being seen beats staying dry
Rain wrecks your visibility to drivers three ways at once: streaked windscreen, wipers creating intermittent blind moments, and grey light flattening contrast until a dark-clothed rider merges into a dark road.
So run lights in daytime rain. Steady on the front, not flashing — a steady beam gives drivers something to judge distance against, while a flashing one makes closing speed hard to read. Rear can flash.
And spend on reflective placement rather than reflective surface area. Material on your ankles and pedals beats a whole reflective jacket, because moving reflectors at a human cadence are the most recognisable thing to a driver's eye. A static panel on your back competes with every other bright thing on a wet street.
What water does to the electrics
Most modern e-bikes handle rain. They're built expecting it. What they're generally not built for is water arriving under pressure or water sitting in a connector.
The failures that actually happen, roughly in order of how often you'll hear about them: corroded display connectors, water wicking into a throttle or brake-cutoff switch and causing phantom behaviour, moisture in a charge port, and grit-plus-water accelerating drivetrain wear into a chain that lasts a third as long as it should.
Rules that are worth following without exception:
- Never pressure-wash an e-bike. A hose on a gentle setting, or a bucket and a brush. Pressure forces water past seals that handle rainfall fine.
- Never plug a charger into a wet port. Dry it, and give it time — an hour indoors, not a paper towel and hope.
- Never charge a battery that's cold and wet from a ride. Let it come up to room temperature first. Charging a cold lithium pack is genuinely bad for it.
- Don't store the bike wet with the battery mounted. Water sits in the mount contacts and corrodes them, and that's an expensive, annoying repair.
Decoding the IP rating on your spec sheet
Manufacturers quote IP codes and most riders have no idea what the digits mean. The second digit is the water one, and it's a defined standard rather than marketing:

Two caveats that the number hides. Ratings are tested on a new, sealed unit — gaskets age, and a three-year-old IPX6 display is not an IPX6 display any more. And the rating applies to the component tested, not the whole bike. An IP-rated motor tells you nothing about the connector block behind the seat tube.
Gear that earns its place
Short list, in order of how much difference each item makes per dollar.
- Full-length mudguards with a proper front flap. The unglamorous champion. Most of the water that soaks you in the rain is thrown up by your own front wheel, not falling from the sky. A stubby "sport" guard does almost nothing.
- Waterproof gloves. Cold, wet hands lose grip strength and fine control fast, and brake modulation is exactly the fine control you need most.
- Clear or yellow-tinted glasses. Rain in your eyes at speed is a real hazard, and dark lenses in grey rain make it worse.
- A jacket that vents. A fully waterproof, unvented shell means you arrive soaked in your own sweat instead. Pit zips or a vented back panel.
- Waterproof bag or a dry liner. Not for your comfort — for the laptop.
Overrated: the poncho or bike cape. It catches wind, obscures your view of the front wheel, and can flap into a rotating part. Skip it.
Pick a different route, not a slower one
The best wet-weather adjustment isn't riding your usual route more carefully. It's riding a route with fewer of the hazards in that table — fewer painted junctions, fewer rail crossings, fewer steel plates, fewer tight downhill turns.
Wide, gently graded, straight roads with predictable traffic beat a clever shortcut through a leafy park path. That path is probably the worst surface within a mile of you the moment it rains.
Worth planning too: where you'd stop. Rain arriving with wind and hail is a "get under an overpass for ten minutes" situation, and that call is much easier if you already know where the shelter is.
Ten minutes after you get home
Wipe the rims and rotors, then lube the chain. Wet-weather riding strips chain lube fast and the rust starts in hours, not days. Leave the battery off the charger until the bike and the pack have warmed up and dried, then charge.
If a wet ride produced any electrical weirdness — a flickering display, an assist cut-out, a throttle that responded when you weren't asking — do not write it off because it went away when things dried out. Water found a path into something, and it'll find the same path next week with more corrosion behind it. That's the one symptom worth taking to a shop rather than waiting out.
